Maverick Labs, INC

Maverick Labs is a U.S.-based biotechnology and materials science company specializing in advanced protein design, synthetic biology, and microbial engineering. The company operates through three tightly integrated subsidiaries—Maverick Metals, Maverick Energy, and the Maverick Bio-Gene Therapy Translational Unit—each of which applies a shared technological foundation to tackle critical challenges across national defense, energy independence, and strategic material access. Together, they develop scalable, field-ready solutions that reinforce the United States’ industrial resilience and military readiness through biotechnology-driven innovation. In the life sciences and military medicine domain, the Maverick Bio-Gene Therapy Translational Unit focuses on localized regenerative therapies using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors. Its flagship program delivers intramuscular AAV9-IGF1 to promote muscle regeneration, with applications ranging from warfighter recovery to muscle-wasting conditions. This work was seeded at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), where Maverick’s founder Eric Herrera contributed to advanced models for chemical warfare agent countermeasures. The unit’s current research translates those insights into low-dose, field-deployable gene therapies with high safety profiles and precision delivery. Maverick Labs is led by Eric Herrera, M.Sc., a synthetic biologist with extensive experience in enzyme engineering, environmental toxicology, and chemical defense. As a former researcher at USAMRICD, Herrera co-developed a prenatal acute exposure and countermeasure evaluation model using humanized AChE mouse strains. His published work includes studies on organophosphate countermeasures, AChE reactivation chemistry, and protein-small molecule interactions relevant to military toxicology and emergency response.

News & Updates

Maverick Metals is supported by Y Combinator, a leading startup accelerator, underscoring its innovative approach and growth potential in the field of metal extraction technologies.

LithX enables heap leaching of chalcopyrite and other refractory sulfides, while also solubilizing valuable byproducts like molybdenum, gold, and silver. This event highlights how Maverick Metals is transforming copper processing and turning low-grade ore, tailings, and smelter slag into high-value feedstock.

Showcases how LithX improves recovery and enhances profitability in critical metal extraction, even from slag and refractory materials, without the need for costly infrastructure or harsh acids.
