What We Do

A multidisciplinary institute advancing regenerative medicine through research in stem cell biology, tissue engineering, and translational therapies. IRM coordinates research and training across several centers, including the Black Family Stem Cell Institute and the Alper Center for Neural Development and Regeneration.

Focuses on understanding stem cell behavior in development, disease, and aging, and developing therapeutic cells and tissues for regenerative medicine.

Develops new therapeutics for blood disorders and cancers using human models and cell therapies.

Conducts research on epithelial tissue regeneration, disease modeling, and stem cell-based therapies for conditions such as skin and lung diseases.

Studies brain development, neurodegenerative diseases, and develops human brain tissue models for research and drug screening.

Hosts a diverse array of faculty-led labs advancing research in adult tissue stem cells, blood and immune disorders, epithelial tissue regeneration, human disease models from stem cells, and neurodevelopmental and degenerative diseases. Notable labs include the Goate Lab (dementia and addiction), Kim Lab (innate immunity and neuroimmunology), Tsankova Lab (glial proliferation in CNS disorders), Yang Lab (psychiatric and neurological disorders), and Yuan Lab (computational systems biology).

A pioneering clinical research program studying the efficacy of artificial pancreas systems to improve blood glucose control in people with type 1 diabetes. The program includes collaborations with leading institutions and ongoing clinical trials to advance diabetes care.

A comprehensive library supporting learning, teaching, clinical care, and research discovery at Mount Sinai, offering access to a wide range of resources, study spaces, and expert staff.

Offers an integrated MD program that blurs the distinction between pre-clinical and clinical years, introducing students to clinical environments from their first day and emphasizing research, diversity, and health equity.

Provides PhD, Master's, MD/PhD, and dual degree programs in biomedical sciences, public health, and clinical research, with a focus on critical thinking, technical skills, and leadership.

Operates the largest graduate medical education consortium in the country, offering over 150 residency and fellowship programs with individualized support, mentorship, and quality improvement initiatives.

Provides postdoctoral fellows with advanced scientific training, mentoring, and career development resources to prepare them for successful careers in academia, industry, and related fields.

Conducts basic, clinical, epidemiologic, and translational research across 350+ labs and 48 institutes, focusing on transforming scientific advances into improved patient outcomes.

Implements system-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, including pathway programs for underrepresented students, and supports a diverse campus community.

Offers a structured program for international medical students in their final year to participate in a range of clinical electives, with a clear application process, eligibility requirements, and support for visiting students.
