Cascade Regional Blood Services is a nonprofit community resource dedicated to providing safe and reliable blood supply to hospitals and patients in Pierce and South King Counties since 1946. It has a rich history of community partnership, innovation in blood collection and processing, and a commitment to saving lives through blood donation and therapeutic services. The organization is transitioning its operations to Bloodworks Northwest in 2024, continuing its legacy of community service and lifesaving contributions.

Products

Red blood cells (and whole blood)

Collected whole blood units that are processed and stored as red blood cell units for transfusion to surgical, trauma and anemic patients.

Plasma (including Fresh Frozen Plasma)

Plasma units separated from whole blood or collected by apheresis, frozen within specified timeframes and used to treat bleeding disorders and major burns.

Platelets

Platelet units collected by apheresis or separated from whole blood, stored at room temperature on agitators and used for patients with bleeding disorders or undergoing cancer treatments and transplants.

Cryoprecipitate

Frozen plasma-derived product rich in clotting factors produced from plasma units and used to treat trauma and bleeding disorders.

Specialized products (pediatric 'baby blood', ECMO/LVAD support, autologous products for manufacture)

Targeted collections and specially prepared products to support pediatric cardiac surgeries, ECMO and LVAD procedures, and autologous white blood cell products for downstream manufacturing or research.

Donor center and mobile blood collection

Collection of whole blood and component donations at fixed donor centers and scheduled mobile blood drives.

Automated apheresis donation scheduling and collection

Apheresis-based collection of platelets, plasma, and double red cell units with donor eligibility assessment and repeat-donor management.

Therapeutic apheresis procedures (hospital-based)

In-hospital therapeutic services performed by trained nursing staff including therapeutic plasma exchange, red blood cell exchange, and cellular depletions.

Therapeutic phlebotomy (appointment-based)

Scheduled phlebotomy procedures at donor centers for treatment of iron overload and polycythemia under physician prescription.

Research product collection under IRB protocol

Collection and provision of blood products and specialized specimens for research under an IRB-approved healthy donor protocol.

Donor recruitment, community outreach and partnership programs

Coordination of community campaigns, school and organizational partnerships, and promotional efforts to increase donor participation and host blood drives.
