What We Do

A comprehensive network of board-approved and recognized centers and institutes advancing research in fields such as additive manufacturing, aging, cardiometabolic science, renewable energy, autism, cancer, digital innovation, and more.

Supports clinical research through participant recruitment, trial management, and collaboration with sponsors and researchers.

Standalone research laboratories providing access to advanced technologies, equipment, and scientific expertise across a variety of disciplines, supporting both internal and external research collaborations. Facilities include additive manufacturing, biocontainment, bioinformatics, biostatistics, cleanroom, clinical research, genomics, imaging, metabolomics, proteomics, and more.

A 10-week entrepreneurship training program for innovators, offering business coaching, networking, and practical skills for launching startups.

A coworking space on the J.D. Nichols Campus for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, providing startups and entrepreneurs with workspace, networking, and access to business and legal experts.

Supports and promotes additive manufacturing research activities, with faculty from engineering, medicine, and dentistry, and funding from industry and federal agencies.

Generates new knowledge relating to cancer and creates effective approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and therapy, delivering medical advances to patients.

Offers a wide array of research-born technologies available for license, spanning software, materials, medications, and medical devices. UofL's technology transfer process is flexible and collaborative, supporting both exclusive and non-exclusive licenses and fostering startup creation.

Connects industry partners with UofL students for co-ops, projects, and internships, leveraging student creativity and expertise. Students can work on industry projects through class assignments, internships, externships, and co-ops, providing hands-on experience and fresh perspectives to industry partners. Example projects include engineering prototyping, MBA consulting, and software development.

Assists with the setup, management, and closeout of research awards, including compliance and subrecipient monitoring.

Manages non-funded agreements such as material transfer agreements, non-disclosure agreements, memorandums of understanding, and data use agreements. These agreements are critical for research collaborations and are handled by the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration and UofL Commercialization and Innovation.

Provides guidance and compliance support for human subjects research, including IRB submissions, training, and resources.

Supports postdoctoral fellows and trainees with resources, professional development, funding opportunities, and career preparation. The office also assists departments and faculty with postdoc recruitment and appointment processes, including orientation, grievance procedures, and benefits guidance.

Provides a suite of systems and tools to support research development and management, including funding search (Pivot), research analytics (Dimensions), internal grant applications (InfoReady), research administration (Cayuse, iRIS), compliance training (CITI Program), and researcher identification (ORCID).

Offers access to a wide range of core facilities, including advanced laboratories, research equipment, and expert personnel in areas such as additive manufacturing, biocontainment, bioinformatics, biostatistics, cleanroom technology, clinical research, genomics, imaging, metabolomics, proteomics, and more.

Provides comprehensive support for launching startups, including R&D resources, entrepreneurial training, access to innovative technologies, flexible licensing, and co-working space. The UofL New Ventures office assists with building startups around UofL-born technologies and offers programs like LaunchIt, a 10-week entrepreneurship bootcamp.

Helps researchers and companies establish industry partnerships for sponsored research, service contracts, material transfer agreements, clinical trials, and licensing of intellectual property. The office guides proposal development, contracting, and intellectual property management.

Assists researchers in preparing, developing, and submitting research proposals, including guidance on institutional policies, budget preparation, compliance, and review processes.

Assists startups and companies in finding co-working space, research facilities, and land on or near campus, including the J.D. Nichols Campus for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and other UofL campuses.

Provides resources for writing, presenting, and publishing research, including branded templates, writing center support, and guidance on journal selection and open-access repositories.

Guides researchers in protecting intellectual property, developing technologies through translational research programs, and commercializing discoveries via licenses, partnerships, or startups.

Coordinates with university departments to ensure research meets regulatory and compliance standards, including research integrity, conflict of interest management, animal and human subjects research, export control, and environmental health and safety.

Provides resources and guidance for hiring regular, temporary, and postdoctoral employees, as well as purchasing processes including PO requisitions, vendor agreements, and use of contracted vendors.

Offers workshops, trainings, and self-directed online modules (such as CITI) on topics including proposal development, grant writing, research compliance, safety, and ethics.

Supports researchers in finding and securing funding through standard grants, internal competitions, translational grants, and industry sponsorships. Provides access to funding databases like Pivot and InfoReady, and offers proposal development support.

Provides detailed guidance on indirect costs (facilities and administrative costs), including current federally negotiated rates, cost recovery policies, and support for budget development in sponsored projects.
