Hiv Vaccine Trials Network

HVTN is the world's largest publicly funded collaboration dedicated to evaluating vaccines to prevent HIV/AIDS. It advances research in vaccinology, social sciences, immunology, and also works on tuberculosis and COVID-19 vaccines. The network conducts all phases of clinical trials to develop a safe and effective HIV vaccine, involving community engagement, scientific research, and global collaboration. It is headquartered at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, WA, and collaborates with research sites, laboratories, and community stakeholders worldwide.

News & Updates

The HVTN exceeded national standards for clinical research, demonstrating superior efficiency in protocol development, study opening, and volunteer enrollment, with detailed performance metrics reported for 2023-2024.

The HVTN 702 trial, a large HIV vaccine efficacy study in South Africa, was stopped early after interim analysis showed it was not effective.

Highlights include completion of seven phase 1 studies of broadly neutralizing antibodies, development of vaccine strategies, and contributions to understanding immune responses and correlates of protection.

Renewal of NIH funding for 7 years

HVTN successfully renewed its grant and funding from the NIH in 2021, supporting ongoing research and trials.

Development of new statistical methods for HIV vaccine evaluation

HVTN scientists developed innovative statistical and analytical methods to evaluate immune responses and vaccine efficacy.

Establishment of laboratory and community research infrastructure

HVTN established state-of-the-art laboratories and community engagement programs across multiple countries.
