The patent process can be daunting for many reasons, from archaic and confusing terminology to strict deadlines and expensive outlays of funds often before your company is even close to turning a profit. Critical in this journey is selecting a competent patent attorney that will take the time to understand your business and help you craft a patent strategy that makes sense from a variety of different angles, timing and costs typically being the most important considerations.
This session provides an overview of the patent process, including an introduction to critical timelines as well as Dos and Don’ts with respect to establishing a patent portfolio. It also addresses intellectual property clauses and disclosure compliance in MTEC awards that involve government funding. MTEC President, Dr. Shawn Green, and Sima Singadia Kulkarni have worked together for close to 30 years, when Sima started her career as a patent attorney and Shawn was a scientist at a biotech company called EntreMed. Together they have successfully obtained numerous patent allowances and have collaborated on both IP and business strategy.
