Novel peritraumatic interventions to improve warfighter outcomes after traumatic stress exposure are difficult to test in far forward environments. Research networks based in the emergency departments of major academic medical centers serving large populations of trauma survivors each year offer an excellent “proving ground” for the evaluation of new treatments. One such network, our AURORA Research Network, has enrolled over 5,000 survivors into longitudinal observational and intervention studies, and has achieved enrollments of 150-180 patients per month. In this presentation, we will discuss the use of the AURORA network to (1) gain new insights into mechanisms mediating the development of acute and chronic stress-related psychological and somatic symptoms and (2) test interventions to reduce acute posttraumatic stress reactions and prevent chronic stress-related symptoms and promote recovery.
