Rugged Physiological Monitoring for the Modern Warfighter: NIRSense

Modern warfighters operate in extreme environments where reliable, real-time physiological monitoring can be critical to performance, safety, and survivability. Yet many existing monitoring technologies are not designed to withstand the demands of military operations. Through MTEC-21-10-NavyMultiTopic NIRSense is advancing ruggedized, wireless physiological monitoring technology designed for demanding Navy environments. Building on its tactical jet physiological episode monitoring capabilities, the project aims to expand access to actionable physiological data across operational settings where conventional monitoring tools may fall short.
Project Highlight
The Problem
U.S. warfighters continue to push the boundaries of human performance to expand their operational envelopes. From high altitude to extreme depth, and across a range of severe temperatures, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are routinely subjected to physiological conditions that challenge the limits of human endurance, in training and in combat alike. The anticipated denied and non-permissive environments of future multi-domain conflicts will make medical evacuation significantly more difficult, requiring that advanced medical capabilities be pushed as far forward as possible. Yet current monitoring tools are largely consumer-grade, neither built nor validated for the extremes of the operational environment, leaving commanders and medical personnel without reliable, real-time insight into a warfighter's physiological status, capacity to perform, or injury state. Without better sensors in the field, critical decisions on when to push forward or pull back remain based on intuition rather than data, increasing risk to both mission success and warfighter survivability.
Project Highlight
With support from MTEC and its Government partners under Award 21-10-NavyMultiTopic, NIRSense is developing a family of ruggedized, reusable wireless physiological sensors purpose-built for the unique demands of the modern American warfighter. Leveraging both proven and novel sensing modalities, including near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), the company is creating monitoring systems capable of operating reliably in the harshest conditions: operational diving environments, far-forward battlefield settings, and high-performance aircrew training platforms. Each system is developed in close partnership with military end users, ensuring that the technology is shaped by real mission requirements rather than laboratory assumptions. Recognizing that machine learning and artificial intelligence are transforming medicine by converting raw physiological data into actionable clinical insight, NIRSense is building the sensor infrastructure needed to capture that data in environments where conventional devices fail — from battlefield resuscitation guidance tools to diver monitoring systems for U.S. Navy special operations. Since receiving the MTEC award, NIRSense has grown rapidly from a team of eight to more than 30 engineers, advancing its core devices to Technology Readiness Level 6 and above. Active operational testing is underway with U.S. Navy divers, U.S. Special Operations Forces, and in collaboration with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, a breadth of validation that reflects both the maturity of the technology and the confidence of front-line military end users.
Impact & the Role of MTEC
If successfully developed and fielded, NIRSense technology has the potential to meaningfully transform how the U.S. military monitors, protects, and sustains its warfighters across the full spectrum of training and combat operations. By providing rugged, accurate, and low-burden physiological monitoring in any environment, the system will improve training safety by giving unit commanders real-time awareness of their personnel's physiological status, enhance Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) by equipping medics with objective data to guide resuscitation decisions, and extend advanced monitoring capabilities to far-forward positions where today's consumer-grade wearables cannot function reliably. The downstream impact on warfighter survivability, readiness, and long-term health outcomes could be substantial. Looking ahead, the platform also holds strong potential for dual-use applications in civilian acute care settings, extending its societal impact to potentially millions of patients worldwide and creating a durable pathway to commercial sustainability. Support from MTEC and its Government partners has been instrumental in accelerating this trajectory. Early in the process, MTEC facilitated critical connections between the NIRSense engineering team and the military end users who defined the true operational requirements for a fielded physiological monitoring system — a contribution that has shaped every aspect of the company's development approach and positioned NIRSense for rapid military transition.
