Abstract

Simulator systems for teaching patient care are provided. In some instances, the simulator system includes a maternal simulator sized and shaped to simulate a pregnant woman, the maternal simulator including a torso, arms, legs, and a head, wherein the torso includes a chamber sized and shaped to receive a fetal simulator and wherein a birthing mechanism is disposed within the chamber for providing rotational and translational movement to the fetal simulator in a birthing simulation; and a fetal simulator sized and shaped to simulate a fetus, the fetal simulator configured to be selectively engaged with the birthing mechanism of the maternal simulator.

Core Innovation

The invention provides an interactive patient-care education simulator system and a method for teaching patient care. A maternal simulator and a fetal simulator are associated with a birthing mechanism disposed within a torso of the maternal simulator. The birthing mechanism selectively engages the fetal simulator so that the fetal simulator is fixedly engaged during rotational and translational movement and disengaged when the fetal simulator is to be removed from the maternal simulator.

The disclosed approach couples the fetal simulator to the birthing mechanism and engages a locking mechanism to fixedly secure the fetal simulator. The birthing mechanism is utilized to provide rotational and translational movement to simulate a birthing sequence, and releasing the locking mechanism allows removal of the fetal simulator from the birthing mechanism and the maternal simulator.

The simulator further includes sensing/feedback and wireless communication to support interactive education, including virtual instruments, sensors, and audio/visual/tactile feedback. The disclosed architecture also supports physiologic modeling and simulator modules with distensible cervix dilation, force sensing during delivery, heart/lung sounds, vital signs, CPR monitoring, circulation and respiratory modeling, scenario sequencing, scenario trending, ECG and external monitoring concepts, audio/voice-related modules, and visual modules synchronized with modeled contractions and fetal heart rate patterns.

Claims Coverage

The partial content identifies two independent claims directed to teaching patient care. The inventive features center on selective engagement and fixed securing of a fetal simulator to a maternal simulator’s birthing mechanism during rotational and translational movement to simulate a birthing sequence, followed by disengagement or release to permit removal.

Selective engagement of fetal simulator by a birthing mechanism

Providing rotational and translational movement to a fetal simulator with a birthing mechanism disposed within a torso of a maternal simulator, wherein the birthing mechanism selectively engages the fetal simulator such that the fetal simulator is fixedly engaged with the birthing mechanism during the rotational and translational movement and disengaged when the fetal simulator is to be removed from the maternal simulator.

Locking mechanism enabling birthing-sequence movement and release for removal

Coupling a fetal simulator to a birthing mechanism of a maternal simulator; engaging a locking mechanism of the birthing mechanism to fixedly secure the fetal simulator; utilizing the birthing mechanism to provide rotational and translational movement to simulate a birthing sequence; and releasing the locking mechanism to allow the fetal simulator to be removed from the birthing mechanism and the maternal simulator.

The independent claims cover selective engagement and fixed securing of a fetal simulator to a maternal simulator’s birthing mechanism during rotational and translational movement to simulate a birthing sequence, followed by release for removal.
