Abstract

A needle retraction apparatus comprising a body having a forwardly projecting needle, a needle retraction mechanism seated inside the body and biasing the needle rearwardly relative to the body, a slide member attachable to the body and having an opening communicating with a needle retraction cavity projecting away from the body, and an actuator rotatable relative to the slide member to reposition the slide member from a first position preventing needle retraction to a second position permitting needle retraction. An IV catheter introducer comprising the subject needle retraction apparatus is also disclosed.

Core Innovation

The invention is a needle retraction apparatus in which a body has a forwardly projecting needle and a needle retraction mechanism seated inside the body biases the needle rearwardly. A rearward slide member is attached in slidable engagement to the body and supports a rotatable needle retraction tube containing a cavity; transverse movement of the slide member changes the apparatus from a position preventing retraction to one permitting retraction into the cavity.

The description further identifies a projecting lug on the retraction tube that engages a positioning notch in the body, and a separate transparent flash chamber that supports blood-return indication and fluid access. The problem addressed in the background section is not explicitly described in the provided patent content. The drawings show the assembly, its components, and repositioning into the retraction state.

Claims Coverage

The provided claim discloses three inventive features of the needle retraction apparatus.

Rearwardly biased needle

A body has a forwardly projecting needle, and a needle retraction mechanism seated inside the body biases the needle rearwardly relative to the body.

Transversely movable slide member

A slide member is disposed rearwardly of the body, attached in slidable engagement to the body, and configured to move transversely between a first position preventing needle retraction and a second position permitting needle retraction.

Rotatable needle retraction tube

A needle retraction tube containing the needle retraction cavity is supported by the slide member and is rotatable relative to the slide member and the body to reposition the slide member, permitting the needle to retract into the cavity.

The independent claim covers a rearwardly biased needle, a transversely movable slide member, and a rotatable retraction tube that positions the slide member to permit retraction of the needle into the cavity.

Stated Advantages

Not explicitly described in patent.

Documented Applications

The apparatus is described as an IV catheter introducer used with an IV catheter whose hub attaches releasably to the luer tip and whose flexible cannula receives the projecting needle.

A separate transparent flash chamber is described as supporting blood-return indication and fluid access.
