Abstract

There is described a dry powder medicament delivery device comprising: a medicament container containing a unit dose of dry powder medicament; a medicament dispensing assembly; and optionally an air source.

Core Innovation

A dry powder medicament delivery device is provided comprising a medicament container containing a unit dose of dry powder medicament, a medicament dispensing assembly, and optionally an air source. The medicament container includes an elongate member provided with airways, an inset cavity that acts as a medicament reservoir, and a slidable outer closure sleeve. A sliding action of the outer closure sleeve reveals some or the entire cavity and aligns the cavity with the airways so that the container provides a non-linear pathway for the flow of the powdered medicament.

The non-linear pathway comprises at least two right angled turns so that the medicament powder is caused to substantially flow via the pathway as the medicament powder is expelled from the delivery device. The flow pathway is therefore defined by the container geometry including the elongate member, the inset cavity, and the slidable outer closure sleeve alignment with the airways, while the dispensing assembly provides the expulsion of the powdered medicament.

The delivery device may further include an air source, and the dry powder medicament delivery device is used for delivering dry powder medicaments to a patient. Documented use includes intranasal delivery and inhalation, and broader examples described include intravenous infusion via mixing/entrainment, emergency therapy such as intranasal glucagon for hypoglycaemia, and dry powder vaccine delivery. Cartridge manufacture is described as involving two-shot moulding with non-bonding polymers to enable sleeve sliding.

Claims Coverage

The document provides two independent claims directed to a dry powder medicament delivery device and a method of delivering a medicament using that device. Across these independent claims, the inventive features center on a medicament container geometry that uses a slidable outer closure sleeve to align an inset cavity reservoir with elongate airways, and a non-linear powder flow pathway having at least two right angled turns as powder is expelled.

Non-linear powder flow pathway with slidable cavity alignment

A medicament container comprising an elongate member provided with airways, an inset cavity which acts as a medicament reservoir, and a slidable outer closure sleeve in which sliding reveals some or the entire cavity and aligns the cavity with the airways, wherein the container provides a non-linear pathway for the flow of the powdered medicament.

Non-linear expulsion through pathway with at least two right angled turns

The medicament powder is caused to substantially flow via the pathway which comprises at least two right angled turns as the medicament powder is expelled from the delivery device.

Delivery method using the defined dry powder medicament delivery device

A method of delivering a medicament to a patient comprising the use of a dry powder medicament delivery device having a medicament container with an elongate member provided with airways, an inset cavity acting as a medicament reservoir, and a slidable outer closure sleeve revealing and aligning the cavity with the airways to provide a non-linear pathway, with powder expelled via a pathway comprising at least two right angled turns.

Overall, claim coverage is based on the combination of an inset cavity reservoir selectively revealed and aligned with elongate airways by a slidable outer closure sleeve, and expulsion of dry powder through a non-linear pathway defined by at least two right angled turns. The method claim applies the same device configuration for delivering a medicament to a patient.

Stated Advantages

Forcing the dry powder through a non-linear flow path with at least two right-angled turns to improve deagglomeration while maintaining clearing velocity.

Documented Applications

Intranasal delivery / nasal inhaler delivery of dry powder medicaments.

Inhalation delivery of dry powder medicaments.

Intravenous infusion via mixing/entrainment (described as an example use).

Emergency therapy example including intranasal glucagon for hypoglycaemia in a diabetic during a hypoglycaemic reaction.

Dry powder vaccine delivery.
