Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions, such as bimatoprost, latanoprost and travoprost, and methods to reduce fat in the body of an individual, for example, by topical administration, injection, and/or implantation of such compositions.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to reducing body fat using cyclopentane heptanoic acid/2-cycloalkyl/2-arylalkyl derivatives, including prostaglandin/prostaglandin-like compounds such as bimatoprost, latanoprost, and travoprost. The compositions are described as having activity for reducing fat in adipose tissue, including effects such as fat cell death, reduced fat cell volume, reduced fat cell maturation, and/or dedifferentiation.

The invention further describes local or diffuse fat reduction, including a mechanism involving prostaglandin/prostaglandin-like agonism, including prostaglandin F2α receptor agonism (prostamide). The structural formulas are defined broadly (formulas I–VIII with variable substituents and stereochemical descriptors), and the compounds are characterized by their ability to act in fat in a localized manner or more diffusely.

In application, the disclosed method includes administering a therapeutically effective amount of latanoprost (or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof) to an individual suffering from undesired orbital fat, as well as treatment contexts involving localized orbital areas (e.g., face/orbit) and reduction of orbital fat. The document also describes adjunct cosmetic/surgical contexts and specific orbital/facial conditions, including thyroid orbitopathy (Grave’s disease) with orbital fat reduction.

Claims Coverage

The independent claim recites one primary inventive feature set: reducing undesired orbital fat by administering a therapeutically effective amount of latanoprost (or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt). Dependent claims further add inventive refinements to treatment indication, anatomical target, administration modality, and composition concentration range for a latanoprost-containing pharmaceutical composition.

Therapeutically effective latanoprost administration for orbital fat reduction

Administering to an individual suffering from undesired orbital fat a therapeutically effective amount of latanoprost, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

Orbital target for latanoprost administration

Administering latanoprost (or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof) to the eye, orbital tissue, or orbital spaces.

Injection administration modality

Performing the administering step by injection.

Thyroid orbitopathy patient population

Using the method for an individual who has thyroid orbitopathy.

Concentration range for latanoprost pharmaceutical composition

Administering a latanoprost-containing pharmaceutical composition with a latanoprost concentration from about 0.001% to about 1.0% (w/v), inclusive.

Across the independent and dependent claims, the method centers on orbital fat reduction via therapeutically effective administration of latanoprost (or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt), with refinements specifying ocular/orbital targets, optional injection administration, a thyroid orbitopathy indication, and a defined latanoprost concentration range for the pharmaceutical composition.

Stated Advantages

Reducing undesired orbital fat.

Orbital fat reduction in thyroid orbitopathy (Grave’s disease).

Documented Applications

Reducing undesired orbital fat by administering latanoprost to an individual suffering from undesired orbital fat.

Treatment in thyroid orbitopathy (Grave’s disease) for orbital fat reduction.

Adjunct cosmetic/surgical contexts are described, including procedures chosen from rhinoplasty, botulinum toxin, orbital decompression, midface lift, sub-oricularis oculi fat lift, or brow lift.
