Abstract

There is provided a microcatheter having a proximal solution lumen and a distal tip portion with a guidewire lumen. The microcatheter and methods of use thereof allows for introduction of solution into a vessel while manipulating the guidewire and/or the microcatheter itself. The solution may be a contrast solution, for viewing of the vessel, a therapeutic or diagnostic solution, or any other type of solution.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a microcatheter for providing support to advance a movable guidewire through a vessel or an occlusion within the vessel while simultaneously providing means for local perfusion of a solution. The microcatheter includes an elongate tubular body with a solution lumen extending axially and an outlet port at the body distal end configured to introduce solution from the solution lumen into the vessel.

A tip portion is continuous with and distal to the elongate tubular body, with a tip portion lumen extending axially through the tip portion and being continuous with the solution lumen. The tip portion lumen has an inner diameter smaller than the body inner diameter, and is sized for a substantially close fit along an entire length of the tip portion for the movable guidewire, providing support and enhanced pushability.

The tip portion has a length extending from the tip portion proximal end to the tip portion distal end of at least 10 mm. This configuration enables the guidewire to be advanced and manipulated within the vessel past the tip portion while being supported by the tip portion, and allows solution to exit through the outlet port into the vessel when the guidewire is positioned within the tip portion.

A method aspect provides support for manipulating the movable guidewire and simultaneously providing solution to a portion of a vessel by placing the movable guidewire in the vessel, advancing the microcatheter over the movable guidewire so the guidewire is placed through at least the tip portion, and introducing solution into the elongate tubular body with the guidewire still positioned within the tip portion. The solution is injected into the vessel through the outlet port with the movable guidewire still positioned within the tip portion while minimizing overall exposure to the solution, and the movable guidewire is advanced distally further into the vessel supported by the tip portion.

Claims Coverage

The disclosure includes two independent claims: one directed to a microcatheter structure for supporting a movable guidewire while delivering solution, and one directed to a corresponding method of use. The main inventive features are centered on a continuous distal tip portion with a close-fit, reduced inner diameter lumen for the movable guidewire, an outlet port for solution exit into the vessel, and a method that injects solution with the guidewire still positioned in the tip portion while minimizing overall exposure.

Microcatheter with close-fit tip lumen for guidewire support and local perfusion

A microcatheter for providing support to advance a movable guidewire through a vessel or an occlusion within the vessel and for simultaneously providing means for local perfusion of a solution, the microcatheter comprising an elongate tubular body having a solution lumen and an outlet port introducing solution into the vessel, and a tip portion distal to the outlet port having a tip portion lumen continuous with the solution lumen, wherein the tip portion lumen is sized for a substantially close fit along an entire length of the tip portion for the movable guidewire to be held therein thus providing support and enhanced pushability.

Tip portion lumen smaller than body lumen with at least 10 mm close-fit length enabling advancement past the tip while perfusing

A microcatheter wherein the tip portion has a length extending from the tip portion proximal end to the tip portion distal end of at least 10 mm and a tip portion inner diameter smaller than the body inner diameter, and wherein in a first configuration and a second configuration the distal end of the movable guidewire is in first and second positions with the second position distal to the first position, such that the guidewire may be advanced and manipulated within the vessel past the tip portion while supported by the tip portion and solution exits through the outlet port into the vessel.

Method advancing microcatheter over close-fit tip while injecting solution with minimized exposure

A method for providing support for manipulating a moveable guidewire and simultaneously providing solution to a portion of a vessel, comprising providing the microcatheter with an elongate tubular body and a distal tip portion having a tip portion lumen continuing the body lumen with a smaller diameter, the tip portion sized to provide support to a movable guidewire by providing a close fit along an entire length of the tip portion extending at least 10 mm, placing the movable guidewire in the vessel, advancing the microcatheter into the vessel over the movable guidewire with the guidewire placed through at least the tip portion, introducing solution into the elongate tubular body with the movable guidewire still positioned within the tip portion, and injecting the solution into the vessel through the outlet port with the movable guidewire still positioned within the tip portion while minimizing overall exposure to the solution.

Supported distal advancement of movable guidewire after solution injection

A method further including advancing the movable guidewire distally from the microcatheter further into the vessel wherein the movable guidewire is supported by the tip portion during said advancing the movable guidewire.

Across the independent claims, the inventive concept is the combination of an outlet port and a continuous distal tip portion whose lumen provides a substantially close-fit for a movable guidewire along at least a 10 mm length, enabling supported advancement and manipulation while simultaneously providing local perfusion, including method steps that inject solution into the vessel while minimizing overall exposure to the solution.

Stated Advantages
