Abstract
In one embodiment, the wound protector has an annularly collapsible proximal ring and a flexible sleeve extends between the proximal ring and distal ring. After positioning of the distal ring in a wound, the proximal ring is expanded to draw the sleeve taut between the rings 11, 12 and is drawn tight against the wound. In a second embodiment, the wound protector has a flexible sleeve secured between a distal ring and proximal ring of fixed diameters. In addition, an expansion member is disposed within a loop of the flexible sleeve about the proximal ring. After positioning of the distal ring in a wound, movement of the expansion member into an extended diametric state expands the loop in the sleeve diametrically while drawing the rings towards each other.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to a wound protector. The wound protector includes a collapsible distal ring, a proximal ring, and a flexible sleeve extending between the proximal ring and the distal ring. The flexible sleeve is disposed within and over the proximal ring to form a loop thereover, enabling an arrangement in which the sleeve loop cooperates with the rings.
An expansion member is disposed within the loop of the flexible sleeve for movement between a collapsed diametric state and an extended diametric state. Movement of the expansion member into the extended diametric state expands the loop diametrically while drawing the distal ring and the proximal ring towards each other, thereby providing secure in-incision positioning as described.
In one described configuration, the expansion member includes a locking device and a first rod. The rod has one end secured in the locking device, an intermediate circumferential section extending circumferentially within the loop and passing through the locking device, and a second end extending outwardly from the locking device and the loop for manual gripping thereof. Related embodiments include different locking device mechanisms for managing the rod and securing the expansion member during use.
Claims Coverage
The partial content provides one independent claim that defines the core wound protector structure and operation through an expansion member with a locking device and a rod, moving between collapsed and extended diametric states and drawing the proximal and distal rings together. Dependent claims further specify locking device refinements.
Collapsible distal ring and proximal ring connected by a flexible sleeve loop
A wound protector comprising a collapsible distal ring, a proximal ring, and a flexible sleeve extending between the proximal ring and the distal ring, the sleeve being disposed within and over the proximal ring to form a loop thereover.
Expansion member that expands the loop while drawing rings together
An expansion member disposed within the loop of the flexible sleeve for movement between a collapsed diametric state and an extended diametric state, wherein movement of the expansion member into the extended diametric state expands the loop diametrically while drawing the distal ring and the proximal ring towards each other.
Locking device and first rod for manual gripping
The expansion member including a locking device and a first rod, the rod having one end secured in the locking device, an intermediate section extending circumferentially within the loop and passing through the locking device, and a second end extending outwardly from the locking device and the loop for manual gripping thereof.
Transversely disposed slot with coaxially mounted roller
A locking device with a transversely disposed slot and a roller rotatably mounted coaxially on the first rod within the slot.
Lever locking and release positions for the rod end
A locking device with a lever that moves between a locking position and a release position to secure or free the second end of the first rod.
Overall claim coverage centers on a wound protector where a flexible sleeve loop over a proximal ring receives an expansion member that moves diametrically between collapsed and extended states to expand the loop and draw the proximal and distal rings together. The expansion member is managed through a locking device and a first rod with an outward manual gripping end, with further dependent refinements specifying either a transversely disposed slot with a coaxially mounted roller or a lever with locking and release positions.
Stated Advantages
Placement and manipulation by a single practitioner.
Does not require rolling a proximal ring outside the incision.
Efficient positioning and secure in-incision positioning.
Documented Applications
Use as a wound protector for securing against an incision as described in the embodiments (in-incision positioning).
