Abstract

A clinical decision support system for patient treatment that incorporates patient data to display information in readily identifiable icons for vital organs and medical systems, and in a useable, real-time, updated fashion that extracts data from the medical history, the current medical management, the current physiologic monitors, and associated medical systems to produce warnings and alerts to enable caregivers to be made aware of physiologic systems at risk. These data are not only presented, but also use real-time queries and calculations to enable caregivers to have the types of data that would traditionally assist them in patient care but only be available by reviewing the medical literature and/or doing retrospective individual calculations while providing patient care.

Core Innovation

The clinical decision support system for patient treatment receives physiological monitoring signals from a monitoring system passively engaging with a patient and from an associated medical system actively engaging with the patient. A controller uses these monitoring signals, previously recorded demographic data, and external health data to calculate a secondary, non-measurable parameter and perform automated calculations that produce display signals for patient treatment decision-making.

The display presents responsive indicia, including an indicium shaped as a readily-identifiable organ and an indicium shaped as a readily-identifiable medical system, which actively display conditions of the associated organ and medical system. The system combines demographic and input data with monitoring indicators, risk alerts, and literature references, while supporting wound assessment using body maps and structured fields to record wound location and characteristics.

Claims Coverage

The claim coverage includes three inventive features across three independent claims (claims 1, 15, and 19), covering clinical decision support systems utilizing patient and medical-system monitoring, controller calculations, and responsive display indicia for patient treatment decision-making.

Patient and medical-system monitoring with an organ-shaped display indicium

Claim 1 recites a monitoring system that passively engages with a patient and outputs a first physiological monitoring signal in response to a measured parameter, and a second physiological monitoring signal in response to a detected condition of an associated medical system actively engaging with the patient. A controller continuously calculates a secondary, non-measurable parameter and performs an automated calculation based on the signals, that parameter, previously recorded demographic data, and health data from an electronic source other than the monitoring signal and medical system. The display includes an indicium substantially shaped as a readily-identifiable organ and operable to actively display a condition indicative of the associated organ.

Medical-literature-based calculation with organ- and medical-system-shaped indicia

Claim 15 recites a monitoring system passively engaging with a patient that outputs a first physiological monitoring signal based on a measured parameter and a second signal based on a detected condition of an associated medical system actively engaging with the patient. A controller continuously calculates a secondary, non-measurable parameter and performs an automated calculation using the first signal, the parameter, previously recorded demographic data, and health data derived from a medical literature database. The display device includes an indicium substantially shaped as a readily-identifiable organ and an indicium substantially shaped as a readily-identifiable medical system, each operable to actively display an associated condition.

Display signals based on physiological monitoring and a non-measured value

Claim 19 recites a monitoring system passively engaging with a patient that outputs physiological monitoring signals in response to a measured patient parameter and a detected condition of an associated medical system. A controller receives the signals, receives or calculates a non-measured value for a medical system, and performs an automated calculation using the signals, the non-measured value, and previously recorded demographic and health data from an electronic source other than the monitoring signals and medical system to output a plurality of display signals for patient treatment decision-making, with display indicia responsive to the monitoring and medical-system display signals.

The three independent claims cover monitoring and calculation features that generate displays for patient treatment decision-making, specifying organ-shaped display indicia in claim 1, both organ- and medical-system-shaped indicia with medical-literature-derived data in claim 15, and display indicia responsive to monitoring and medical-system display signals derived using a non-measured value in claim 19.
