Abstract

A catheter assembly is disclosed herein including a hub assembly and a needle retracting device. The hub assembly includes a hub and a catheter attached to the hub. The needle retracting device releasably attached to the hub assembly and arranged to project a needle through the catheter for catheterization and to retract the needle and allow detachment from the hub assembly. The needle retracting device includes a chassis extending from a base and a slider carrying the needle supported on the chassis. The slider arranged to move away from the base from a position in which the needle projects through the catheter to a position in which the needle is withdrawn from the catheter and shielded by the chassis. The chassis and hub include movable locking members and cooperating locking surfaces for engaging the locking members. The slider includes retaining surfaces for limiting movement of the locking members.

Core Innovation

The disclosed invention is a single-use catheter assembly that includes a hub assembly having a hub and a catheter attached to the hub, and a needle retracting device releasably attached to the hub assembly. The needle retracting device is arranged to project a needle through the catheter to allow catheterization, and to retract the needle in response to user actuation. The needle retracting device is further arranged to be detached or to allow detachment from the hub assembly after retraction.

The needle retracting device comprises a chassis extending along an axis from a base and a slider carrying the introducer needle. The slider is supported on the chassis and is moveable away from the base along the axis between a first position and a second position. In the first position the needle projects through the catheter, and in the second position the needle is withdrawn from the catheter and is shielded by the chassis.

The chassis and the hub comprise movable locking members and cooperating locking surfaces for engaging the locking members, while the slider comprises retaining surfaces that limit movement of the locking members. When the slider is in the first position, the retaining surfaces discourage or prevent the locking members from disengaging from the locking surfaces. When the slider is in the second position, the locking members are free to disengage from the locking surfaces, thereby allowing the needle retracting device to disengage from the hub assembly, using an inner wall of a tubular body of the slider that provides the retaining surfaces.

Claims Coverage

The independent claim (clm-00001) covers one inventive feature set in a catheter assembly in which a releasably attached needle retracting device retracts and can detach from the hub, using an axially moveable slider, locking members, cooperating locking surfaces, and slider retaining surfaces that control when the locking members can disengage.

Hub and releasable needle retracting device for projecting and retracting the needle

A catheter assembly comprising a hub assembly with a hub and a catheter attached to the hub, and a needle retracting device releasably attached to the hub assembly, wherein the needle retracting device is arranged to project a needle through the catheter to allow catheterization and, in response to user actuation, to retract the needle and to be detached or to allow detachment from the hub assembly.

Chassis and axially moveable slider positions that project and shield the needle

A chassis extending along an axis from a base, and a slider carrying the needle supported on the chassis, arranged to be moveable away from the base along the axis from a first position in which the needle projects through the catheter to a second position in which the needle is withdrawn from the catheter and is shielded by the chassis.

Locking members and cooperating locking surfaces controlled by slider retaining surfaces

The chassis and hub comprise movable locking members and cooperating locking surfaces for engaging the locking members, and wherein the slider comprises retaining surfaces for limiting movement of the locking members, such that when the slider is in the first position the locking members are discouraged or prevented from disengaging from the locking surfaces by the retaining surfaces, and when the slider is in the second position the locking members are free to disengage from the locking surfaces and so allow the needle retracting device to disengage from the hub assembly.

Tubular chassis and inner wall retaining surfaces for the locking members

The chassis comprises a tubular body extending from the base portion to a distal end along the axis, the slider comprises a tubular body disposed outside the tubular body of the chassis, the hub carrying the needle, and member(s) connecting the hub to the tubular body of the slider, wherein an inner wall of the tubular body of the slider provides the retaining surfaces.

Overall, the claim coverage centers on the interaction between an axially moveable slider and a locking system between the chassis and hub. The slider’s retaining surfaces enforce a first state where locking members remain engaged and then allow a second state where the locking members disengage, enabling needle retraction and subsequent disengagement from the hub.

Stated Advantages

Allows catheterization by projecting a needle through the catheter and then retracting and shielding the needle.

Enables the needle retracting device to disengage from the hub assembly after needle retraction.

Documented Applications

Used as a single-use catheter assembly (infusion set) in catheterization where a needle is projected through a catheter and then retracted and shielded.
