Abstract

Personal care products exhibiting superior conditioning and/or color fastness can be obtained by use of mixtures of certain phosphate esters and polyquats.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to applying a personal care product to hair to impart superior conditioning while excluding alkoxylated phosphate ester. The personal care product comprises a polyquaternium compound having 100 or more quaternary nitrogen groups and a weight average molecular weight between 30,000 and 1,000,000, together with at least one nonalkoxylated phosphate ester of fatty alcohols.

In the claimed compositions, the nonalkoxylated phosphate ester is selected from dioleyl phosphate ester, monocetyl phosphate ester, and isostearyl phosphate ester and is present in a defined ratio relative to the polyquaternium compound. The personal care product further includes an additional ingredient and provides a measured reduction in wet combing force of a hair sample treated therewith by at least about 10 Joules relative to water.

A further aspect of the invention preserves the degree of hair color in synthetically colored hair by applying the same type of personal care product that combines the specified polyquaternium compound and nonalkoxylated phosphate ester while not containing an alkoxylated phosphate ester. Dependent limitations additionally associate the claimed system with reduced hair color change after about fifteen washes and with formulation constraints that may require the nonalkoxylated phosphate ester to include an amount relationship between monophosphate and diphosphate.

Claims Coverage

The document includes four independent claims that cover two related method categories: imparting superior conditioning to hair and preserving the degree of hair color in synthetically colored hair. Across these independent claims, the inventive features repeatedly combine a defined high-quaternary polyquaternium compound with specified nonalkoxylated phosphate ester selection and ratio, while requiring the absence of alkoxylated phosphate ester and a reduction in wet combing force relative to water.

High-quaternary polyquaternium conditioning system

A personal care product comprising a polyquaternium compound having 100 or more quaternary nitrogen groups and having a weight average molecular weight of between 30,000 and 1,000,000.

Nonalkoxylated phosphate ester with defined fatty alcohol selection and ratio

At least one nonalkoxylated phosphate ester of fatty alcohols, wherein said nonalkoxylated phosphate ester is selected from the group consisting of dioleyl phosphate ester, monocetyl phosphate ester, and isostearyl phosphate ester, and wherein a ratio of said nonalkoxylated phosphate ester to said polyquaternium compound is at least about 2:1.

Wet combing force reduction versus water without alkoxylated phosphate ester

The personal care product is capable of reducing a wet combing force of a hair sample treated therewith by at least about 10 Joules relative to water, and wherein the personal care product does not contain an alkoxylated phosphate ester.

Hair color preservation in synthetically colored hair

A method of preserving the degree of hair color in synthetically colored hair comprising applying a personal care product to hair, the personal care product comprising a polyquaternium compound having 100 or more quaternary nitrogen groups and having a weight average molecular weight of between 30,000 and 1,000,000, at least one nonalkoxylated phosphate ester of fatty alcohols, wherein the ratio of said nonalkoxylated phosphate ester to said polyquaternium compound is at least about 2:1, and wherein the personal care product does not contain alkoxylated phosphate ester.

Overall, the independent claims define personal care product formulations that combine a high-quaternary polyquaternium compound with specific nonalkoxylated phosphate ester constraints, exclude alkoxylated phosphate ester, and require reduction of wet combing force by at least about 10 Joules relative to water. For hair color-specific claims, the claims also address preserving the degree of hair color in synthetically colored hair and reduced hair color change after about fifteen washes.

Stated Advantages
