Abstract
A substrate is provided with a metal electron donating surface made up of metal particles on the substrate, the metal particles having palladium and at least one metal selected from gold, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, or platinum. The amount of the metal particles present on the substrate is from about 0.001 to about 8 μg/cm2 and wherein the substrate is part of a device or object from aspects of the medical field.
Core Innovation
A device includes a substrate having an electron donating surface. The electron donating surface comprises a metal selected from silver and zinc. Metal particles are deposited on the electron donating surface, where the metal particles comprise palladium and at least one metal selected from gold, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, and platinum.
The amount of the metal particles is from 0.001 to about 8 μg/cm2. The metal particles do not form a covering layer, but are uniformly distributed particles or clusters on the electron donating surface.
The tuned surface properties include hydrophobicity, protein adsorption, bacterial adhesion or growth, thrombogenicity, and friction or surface hardness. The document further states reductions in nosocomial bacterial transmission and provides evaluation of complement activation and inflammatory response, including readouts associated with C3b binding and C3a and IL-8/TCC assays.
Claims Coverage
The partial content provides one independent claim. Across that independent claim, the core inventive features center on an electron donating surface made of silver or zinc, palladium-containing metal particles deposited at a defined loading range without forming a covering layer, and a uniform non-covering distribution as particles or clusters.
Electron donating surface comprising silver or zinc
A substrate having an electron donating surface comprising a metal selected from the group consisting of silver and zinc.
Palladium plus at least one selected metal in deposited particles
Metal particles are deposited on said electron donating surface, said metal particles comprising palladium and at least one metal selected from the group consisting of gold, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, and platinum.
Non-covering uniform distribution of palladium-containing metal particles
The amount of said metal particles is from 0.001 to about 8 μg/cm2, and wherein the metal particles do not form a covering layer, but are uniformly distributed particles or clusters on said electron donating surface.
The independent claim requires an electron donating surface made from silver or zinc, palladium-containing metal particles with at least one specified additional metal, and a particle loading range of 0.001 to about 8 μg/cm2. The particles must be uniformly distributed without forming a covering layer, as uniformly distributed particles or clusters.
Stated Advantages
Tuning surface properties including hydrophobicity, protein adsorption, and bacterial adhesion or growth.
Prevention of nosocomial bacterial transmission.
Reduction of bacterial growth for pathogens including E. coli and other pathogens including Candida.
Evaluation and modulation related to complement activation readouts (C3b binding; C3a and IL-8/TCC assays).
Evaluation of thrombogenicity and platelet adhesion.
Reduction or modulation of inflammatory response metrics (ELISA; in vitro and in vivo cytokine and cell recruitment).
Documented Applications
Medical devices/objects including contact lenses, pacemakers, stents, dental implants, catheters, ECG electrodes, dialysis equipment, and wound dressings that can include the coated substrate.
