Abstract

Catheters for occluding, visualizing, irrigating, evacuating, and delivering agents to a treatment area are disclosed. The catheters comprise a catheter body comprising five lumens, first and second occlusion balloons coupled to the catheter body, an optional space-occupying balloon coupled to the catheter body and disposed between the first and second occlusion balloons, and an optional visualization means that enables visualization between the first and second occlusion balloons. Methods for using these catheters are also disclosed. A method comprises inflating the first and second occlusion balloons, inflating the space-occupying balloon, allowing fluid to exit via an evacuation lumen, optionally irrigating or aspirating to facilitate fluid exit via said lumen, and delivering an agent to a treatment area via the agent lumen.

Core Innovation

The invention provides an occlusion perfusion catheter (OPC) for site-specific treatment of vascular lesions. The catheter has a catheter body with multiple lumens and a proximal occluding balloon and a distal occluding balloon that define an isolated treatment region in a targeted vessel segment.

Separate catheter lumens and ports establish a therapeutic agent perfusion/delivery path and an aspiration/evacuation path for the isolated region. The OPC embodiments include skive ports and/or orifice ports that communicate one or more lumens with the vessel exterior so that therapeutic agent is perfused or delivered to the isolated region and aspirated from the isolated region.

The catheter can further include an optional space-occupying balloon to reduce the volume of the treatment region and increase effective pressure for delivery and/or forced media penetration. The invention also provides an occlusion visualization catheter (OVC) with visualization and/or illumination means positioned between occluding balloons, and further embodiments add pressure-sensing means positioned near the delivery or perfusion skive to measure pressure in the isolated treatment region.

Optional valves or check valves are included to prevent crossflow between lumens. Structural features described across embodiments include hubs, balloon inflation lumens/ports, and connectors for pressure sensing as part of the catheter system for localized treatment under occlusion.

Claims Coverage

Not explicitly described in patent.

Stated Advantages

Provides site-specific treatment of vascular lesions using an isolated treatment region defined by proximal and distal occluding balloons.

Enables therapeutic agent perfusion/delivery and aspiration/evacuation from the isolated treatment region using separate lumens and ports.

Optional space-occupying balloon reduces treatment volume and increases effective pressure for delivery and/or forced media penetration.

Optional visualization/illumination means supports occlusion visualization between occluding balloons.

Pressure-sensing means positioned near delivery/perfusion skive measures pressure in the isolated treatment region.

Optional valves/check valves prevent crossflow between lumens.

Documented Applications

Flush/aspirate to perform exchange in the isolated treatment region.

Sequential exchange in the isolated treatment region using the catheter lumens for agent delivery and aspiration.

Simultaneous exchange in the isolated treatment region using the catheter lumens for agent delivery and aspiration.

Vacuum two-part polymer treatment in an isolated vessel segment using the catheter system for delivery and evacuation.
