Abstract

Methods and systems for delivering or placing a gastrointestinal implant device into a mammal. The gastrointestinal implant device can be used to limit absorption of food products in specific parts of the digestive system and can include a gastrointestinal sleeve having an anchor portion and a barrier or sleeve portion. The methods include endoluminal delivery of the device.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to endoluminal delivery and placement of a gastrointestinal implant device in a mammal. The gastrointestinal implant device includes an anchor and a floppy sleeve coupled to the anchor and folded into a container assembly, and the container assembly stores the anchor with the folded floppy sleeve and is directed into a mammalian gastrointestinal tract to a target location.

In the disclosed placement approach, a portion of the floppy sleeve is removed from the container assembly by extending a portion of the floppy sleeve from the anchor and from the container assembly to a location in the gastrointestinal tract that is distal relative to the assembly. During this extension, the anchor is retained in the container assembly, and after the sleeve portion is positioned, the anchor is subsequently removed from the container assembly and secured to a location in the gastrointestinal tract.

A delivery system is described for placing the gastrointestinal implant device that includes the container assembly, a delivery extension to deliver the container assembly into the gastrointestinal tract, and an inner extension to draw a portion of the sleeve from the anchor and from the container assembly as the anchor is retained therein. The disclosed device architectures include anchor locking mechanisms, anchor plungers, compartmentalized structures using chambers, and multi-container or two-capsule and everting-catheter concepts for extending longer sleeves.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims identified are directed to two inventive features: a method of placing a gastrointestinal implant device and a delivery system configured to perform the placement.

Staged placement with retained anchor and extended floppy sleeve

Placing a gastrointestinal implant device in a container assembly, the implant device including an anchor and a floppy sleeve coupled to the anchor and folded into the container assembly; directing the container assembly into a mammalian gastrointestinal tract; removing at least a portion of the floppy sleeve by extending a portion of the floppy sleeve from the anchor and from the container assembly to a distal location while the anchor is retained in the assembly; and subsequently removing the anchor from the container assembly and securing the anchor to a location in the gastrointestinal tract.

Delivery system with container assembly, delivery extension, and inner extension drawing sleeve

A delivery system for placing a gastrointestinal implant device in a mammalian gastrointestinal tract comprising a container assembly; a gastrointestinal implant device stored within the container assembly, the device including a proximal end with an anchor and a distal end with a floppy sleeve coupled to the anchor and folded into the container assembly; a delivery extension configured to deliver the container assembly into the gastrointestinal tract with the anchor and floppy sleeve stored within the container assembly; and an inner extension to draw a portion of the sleeve from the anchor and from the container assembly as the anchor is retained therein.

Across the independent claims, the coverage centers on staged deployment: the container assembly is delivered into the gastrointestinal tract with the anchor and folded floppy sleeve stored; a sleeve portion is extended or drawn distally while the anchor is retained in the container assembly; and the anchor is then removed and secured, or retained during sleeve draw by the delivery system architecture.
