Abstract
A delivery apparatus for a medical device can include a first shaft, a second shaft, a suture guide, a suture, an apex guide, and a suture retention member. The second shaft can be disposed within and movable relative to the first shaft. The suture guide can be coupled to the second shaft. The suture can extend from the suture guide and can be configured for releasably securing the medical device to the delivery apparatus. The apex guide can be movably coupled to the suture and configured for engaging an end of the medical device and guiding the end of the medical device into the first shaft. The suture retention member can be movable relative to the suture guide and the suture and configured for selectively securing the suture relative to the suture guide.
Core Innovation
The medical device delivery assemblies releasably secure a radially expandable and compressible stent to a delivery apparatus. The stent comprises circumferentially spaced apices and is configured to radially expand and axially foreshorten, or to radially compress and axially elongate. One or more sutures extend from a suture guide, through one or more apex guides, around stent apices, and around a suture retention member.
The delivery apparatus further comprises relatively movable first and second shafts, a suture guide, an apex guide, and a movable suture retention member. The apex guide engages an end of the medical device and guides that end into the first shaft during device retrieval. The suture retention member moves relative to the suture guide and suture to selectively secure or release the suture relative to the suture guide.
Claims Coverage
The independent claims cover three inventive features concerning suture-based stent attachment, guided suture routing, and selective securing or release.
Suture-secured stent delivery assembly
Claim 1 recites a stent configured to radially expand and axially foreshorten from a first state to a second state, and to radially compress and axially elongate from the second state to the first state, wherein a suture extends from a suture guide, through an apex guide, around an apex of the stent, and around a suture retention member to releasably secure the stent to a delivery apparatus.
Multiple-suture stent delivery assembly
Claim 8 recites a stent releasably secured to a delivery apparatus by a plurality of sutures, with each suture extending from a suture guide, through at least one apex guide, around at least one stent apex, and around a suture retention member.
Delivery apparatus with a movable apex guide
Claim 16 recites first and second shafts, with the second shaft disposed within and movable relative to the first shaft, an apex guide movably coupled to a suture to engage an end of the medical device and guide that end into the first shaft, and a suture retention member movable relative to the suture guide and suture to selectively secure the suture.
Together, the independent claims cover suture-based releasable securement of an expandable stent, guided routing via apex guides, and apparatus configurations comprising relatively movable shafts with selective suture retention.
Stated Advantages
Apex guides direct apices into the delivery cylinder during retrieval, reducing snagging and retrieval force.
Controlled expansion can reduce valve migration.
Mechanically expanding the frame may reduce paravalvular leakage and the need for balloon post-dilation.
Documented Applications
Delivery, implantation, repositioning, recapture, and release of a medical device, such as a stent or prosthetic heart valve, in relation to a patient's body during an implantation procedure.
Positioning an expandable stent at a heart valve.
