Abstract
In accordance with at least one aspect of this disclosure, an access port for performing an endoscopic surgical procedure in a surgical cavity of a patient includes a proximal housing portion. The proximal housing portion includes, a central lumen providing instrument access to the surgical cavity and an engagement housing operatively associated with a proximal end of the proximal housing portion and having a circumferential engagement area formed therein that is adapted and configured to releasably accept a grasping member of a surgical robot. An elongated tubular body portion extends from the proximal housing portion in communication with the central lumen.
Core Innovation
The invention describes an endoscopic access port with a proximal housing portion that provides a central lumen for instrument access to a surgical cavity and an elongated tubular body in communication with the lumen. An engagement housing at the proximal end has a concave circumferential engagement area configured to releasably accept a grasping member of a surgical robot. The port also includes a seal housed within the proximal housing portion.
A gas-sealed version uses an inlet path and an annular jet assembly to receive pressurized gas and generate a gaseous seal within a tapered neck portion. The stated purpose of this seal is to maintain stable pressure within the surgical cavity. The background section is not included in the provided content, so the problem being solved is not explicitly described in patent.
Claims Coverage
The two independent claims cover two inventive features: an endoscopic access port with a robot-compatible engagement housing and seal, and a gas-sealed access port with an annular jet assembly and robot-compatible engagement housing.
Robot-compatible endoscopic access port
Claim 1 recites a proximal housing portion with a central lumen and interior plenum, a seal housed within the plenum, and an elongated tubular body in communication with the lumen. The engagement housing has a concave circumferential engagement area, defined between upper and lower annular portions of equal outer diameter, that releasably accepts a grasping member of a surgical robot.
Gas-sealed access port with an annular jet assembly
Claim 7 recites a proximal housing portion with a central lumen, an inlet path for pressurized gas, a tapered neck portion, and an interior cavity accommodating a seal that includes an annular jet assembly. The assembly generates a gaseous seal within the tapered neck portion to maintain stable pressure in the surgical cavity. The engagement housing releasably accepts a surgical robot grasping member.
The independent claims cover an access port with a robot-compatible circumferential engagement area and either a seal housed in the proximal housing portion or a gas-sealing arrangement using an annular jet assembly.
Stated Advantages
The gaseous seal maintains stable pressure within the surgical cavity.
Documented Applications
Performing an endoscopic surgical procedure in a surgical cavity of a patient.
