Abstract

In some embodiments, a device performs character recognition based on spatial and temporal components of touch input detected on a touch-sensitive surface. In some embodiments, a device provides feedback about handwritten input and its recognition by the device. In some embodiments, a device presents a user interface for changing previously-inputted characters.

Core Innovation

The invention provides an electronic device with one or more processors and memory storing programs that are configured to be executed to perform handwritten character recognition and correction on a touch-sensitive surface. While displaying a user interface via a display device, the programs receive an indication of a first input that includes movement of a first contact detected on the touch-sensitive surface, and a representation of the movement of the first contact is displayed in the user interface while the movement is being detected within a first region.

After receiving completion of the movement of the first contact, the programs cease display of the representation of the movement of the first contact in the user interface and display a first character that corresponds to the completed movement within the first region. While displaying the first character, the programs receive an indication of a second input that includes movement of a second contact detected on the touch-sensitive surface.

In response to receiving the indication of the second input, the programs determine that the second input includes a sequence of one or more inputs to replace the first character. Based on that determination, the programs display a first plurality of alternative candidate characters that correspond to the movement of the first contact, and the user interface is configured to support replacement through the alternative candidate characters.

Claims Coverage

The provided independent claims are clm-00001, clm-00010, and clm-00011, and each centers on three inventive features: live display of a movement representation during touch detection, cessation of that representation and display of a corresponding character on completion, and sequence-based replacement that displays alternative candidate characters.

Live movement representation in a first region during touch detection

While displaying, via a display device, a user interface, receiving, via a touch-sensitive surface, an indication of a first input that includes movement of a first contact detected on the touch-sensitive surface, wherein a representation of the movement of the first contact is displayed in the user interface while the movement of the first contact is being detected, and wherein the representation of the movement of the first contact is displayed within a first region of the user interface.

Stop movement representation and display a corresponding character on completion

After receiving a completion of the movement of the first contact in the first input, ceasing display of the representation of the movement of the first contact in the user interface and displaying a first character that corresponds to the completed movement of the first contact in the user interface, wherein the first character is displayed within the first region of the user interface.

Sequence-based replacement with alternative candidate characters

While displaying the first character that corresponds to the completed movement of the first contact at the user interface, receiving, via the touch-sensitive surface, an indication of a second input that includes movement of a second contact detected on the touch-sensitive surface; and in response to receiving the indication of the second input, in accordance with a determination that the second input includes a sequence of one or more inputs to replace the first character, displaying a first plurality of alternative candidate characters that correspond to the movement of the first contact in the first input.

Across clm-00001, clm-00010, and clm-00011, the claims consistently cover touch-driven character input where movement is visually represented during detection in a first region, the representation is stopped and a corresponding character is displayed upon completion, and a second touch input sequence triggers display of alternative candidate characters for replacing the first character.
