Abstract

Antiseptic caps that can be used to disinfect and/or protect medical connectors are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the antiseptic cap can include a first chamber configured to be removably attached to the medical connector.

Core Innovation

The sanitizing male luer cap comprises a housing, a chamber, and an inner protrusion configured to receive at least a portion of a male luer of a medical connector. Antiseptic material containing antiseptic liquid is positioned across the chamber opening to wipe and apply liquid to the distal end face and side wall as the male luer advances into the cap. A lid encloses the chamber and resists escape of antiseptic liquid before use.

An additional cap configuration includes a protrusion with distal and proximal portions of different inner cross-sectional widths. The distal portion receives at least a portion of the antiseptic material, while the proximal portion couples to the male luer end and holds the cap on the connector. The disclosure further includes perforations or flap portions in the antiseptic material, cap holders, carrier strips, dispensing bags, and syringe assemblies.

Claims Coverage

The claims define two inventive features across two independent claims directed to sanitizing male luer cap configurations.

Sanitizing male luer cap with tapered inner protrusion

A housing has a first chamber, and an inner protrusion extending upwardly from a bottom wall forms at least part of a second chamber, with at least part of its inner surface tapered and configured to tightly receive at least a portion of a male luer. Antiseptic material containing antiseptic liquid is attached to the upper end of the inner protrusion across the opening of the second chamber to wipe and apply antiseptic liquid to the male luer distal end face and side wall as it advances into the second chamber. A lid encloses the first chamber and resists escape of antiseptic liquid before use, leaving a gap between the housing interior outer-wall surface and the medical connector when attached.

Sanitizing luer cap with differently sized protrusion portions

A protrusion within a housing chamber has an outer surface coupled to antiseptic material and an opening configured to receive a male luer end. A distal portion of the protrusion has a first inner cross-sectional width configured to receive at least part of the antiseptic material, and a proximal portion has a different second inner cross-sectional width configured to couple to the male luer end and hold the cap on the medical connector. The antiseptic material is configured to sanitize the male luer end when attached by wiping and applying antiseptic liquid to its distal end face and side wall.

The independent claims cover cap structures positioning antiseptic material to wipe and apply antiseptic liquid to a male luer, characterized by defined inner protrusion dimensions, sealing lids, or clearance gaps between the housing and connector.

Stated Advantages

The antiseptic material wipes and applies antiseptic liquid to the male luer distal end face and side wall to sanitize the male luer end.

The lid resists escape of antiseptic liquid from the first chamber before use.

The perforation length is configured to inhibit fluid passage between the antiseptic material and the male luer end.

The proximal portion of the protrusion couples to the male luer end and holds the cap on the medical connector.

Documented Applications

Sanitizing a male luer end of a medical connector when the cap is attached by wiping and applying antiseptic liquid to the distal end face and side wall.

Storing and providing access to caps using a cap holder assembly, carrier strip, or multi-cap dispensing bag and package.

Use in a syringe assembly.
