Abstract

Described herein are wound dressings and methods of their use, wherein the wound dressings comprise a polymeric component. The polymeric component is a polyethyleneimine intermediate selected from the group consisting of:at least one R60 is —(CH2)3OH but less than 50% of all R60 are —(CH2)3OH; and the polyethyleneimine intermediate has a ratio of total quaternary amines to total hydroxyl groups of at least 1:1.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a wound dressing comprising a polymeric component, wherein the polymeric component is a polyethyleneimine intermediate. The polyethyleneimine intermediate is selected such that each R60 is independently selected from —(CH2)3OH and —C6H13, with at least one R60 being —(CH2)3OH but less than 50% of all R60 being —(CH2)3OH. Each n is an integer independently selected from 1 to 3000, and each X− is independently selected from acetate, halide, sulfate, sulfonate, phosphate, phosphonate, carbonate, silicate, hexafluorophosphate, hexafluoroantimonate, triflate, and borate.

A further defining characteristic is that the polyethyleneimine intermediate has a ratio of total quaternary amines to total hydroxyl groups of at least 1:1. The polymeric component is characterized by partially quaternized nitrogens, and dependent subject matter refines the wound dressing by specifying quantitative compositions and structural constraints for the polyethyleneimine intermediate, including limits on the relative contents of the —(CH2)3OH and —C6H13 substituents and thresholds for quaternization of nitrogen atoms.

The disclosed compositions are supported by embodiments describing multiple PEI-based quaternized polyethyleneimine intermediate compositions and series of intermediate compounds. The partial content describes antimicrobial efficacy testing and wound-healing related biological results associated with these quaternized polyethyleneimine intermediates, including effects described for Gram+ and Gram− organisms and behavior consistent with biofilm inhibition and loss of viability in the presence of the compounds.

Claims Coverage

The provided material includes one independent claim. It defines a wound dressing by specifying a polyethyleneimine intermediate with defined substituents (R60), a defined integer backbone parameter (n), defined counterion selection (X−), and a minimum ratio of total quaternary amines to total hydroxyl groups. Dependent claims refine the dressing form and composition and add specific quantitative and use limitations.

Polyethyleneimine intermediate with defined R60 substituents and counterion X−

A wound dressing comprising a polymeric component, wherein the polymeric component is a polyethyleneimine intermediate selected from the group consisting of substituents in which each R60 is independently selected from —(CH2)3OH and —C6H13, with at least one R60 being —(CH2)3OH but less than 50% of all R60 being —(CH2)3OH, wherein each X− is independently selected from acetate, halide, sulfate, sulfonate, phosphate, phosphonate, carbonate, silicate, hexafluorophosphate, hexafluoroantimonate, triflate, and borate.

Integer backbone parameter n for the polyethyleneimine intermediate

The polyethyleneimine intermediate has each n being an integer independently selected from 1 to 3000.

Quaternary amines to hydroxyl groups ratio constraint

The polyethyleneimine intermediate has a ratio of total quaternary amines to total hydroxyl groups of at least 1:1.

Across the independent claim, the core coverage is the wound dressing polymeric component defined specifically by the polyethyleneimine intermediate substituent pattern for R60 with —(CH2)3OH present but limited, selection of the counterion X− from a specified list, integer backbone parameter n in the stated range, and a minimum quaternary-amine-to-hydroxyl ratio of at least 1:1. Dependent claims further narrow embodiments by adding quantitative substituent mol% ranges, a quaternized nitrogen threshold, additional constraints on n, selected dressing configuration types, and a healing-promoting use with the claimed dressing applied to a wound or surgical site.
