Abstract

A collapsible and expandable implant for implanting in a heart chamber on a side of a heart. The implant may include an outer section including a curved portion configured to be positioned in the heart chamber. The implant may be sized such that an ellipsoid conforming to the curved portion has a height greater than a length of the heart chamber by a percentage that is within a predetermined range of height percentage values. The implant may be sized such that the ellipsoid has a width greater than a width of the heart chamber by a percentage that is within a predetermined range of width percentage values. The length and width of the heart chamber may be defined in an image of the heart chamber.

Core Innovation

An implant for implanting in a heart chamber on a side of a heart includes an outer section with a curved portion configured to be positioned in the heart chamber. The implant is sized such that an ellipsoid conforming to the curved portion has an ellipsoid height greater than a length of the heart chamber by a predetermined percentage range, and an ellipsoid width greater than a width of the heart chamber by a predetermined percentage range.

The length and width of the heart chamber are defined in an image of the heart chamber using a level that approximates an upper annular surface at a bottom of the heart chamber and a point on a roof of the heart chamber within a defined distance of a highest point on the roof in the image. A cross-section of the ellipsoid along a central axis of the implant defines an ellipse, where a long axis of the ellipse is the ellipsoid height and a short axis of the ellipse is the ellipsoid width, and where the long axis is greater than, or equal to, the short axis.

In some embodiments, the implant includes an inner valve support positioned inside the implant and configured, when deployed in an atrium, to provide blood flow impingement on a posterior side of a ventricle during atrial contraction. In such embodiments, dimensions of the inner valve support are preselected and not determined based on metrics derived from the image, and the implant is collapsible for deployment and expandable to be anchorable by pressured contact without piercing heart tissue.

Claims Coverage

The partial content identifies two independent claims, each directed to an implant sized using image-defined heart-chamber dimensions and an ellipsoid-conforming outer curved portion with oversizing defined by predetermined percentage ranges. The independent claims share the same image-based length and width definition and ellipsoid axis relationship, while they differ by the inclusion and role of the inner valve support in one independent claim and additional atrium/ventricle functional and preselection constraints in the other.

Ellipsoid-conforming outer curved portion sized by image-defined atrial chamber dimensions

An implant includes an outer section including a curved portion positioned in a heart chamber, sized so an ellipsoid conforming to the curved portion has an ellipsoid height greater than a length of the heart chamber by a predetermined range of height percentage values and an ellipsoid width greater than a width of the heart chamber by a predetermined range of width percentage values, where the length and width of the heart chamber are defined in an image of the heart chamber using a level approximating an upper annular surface and a roof point within a defined distance of a highest point on the roof in the image.

Image-defined chamber length and ellipse-based ellipsoid height/width relationship along a central axis

A cross-section of the ellipsoid along a central axis defines an ellipse, where a long axis of the ellipse is the ellipsoid height and a short axis is the ellipsoid width, and where the long axis is greater than, or equal to, the short axis; the heart-chamber length extends between a level approximating an upper annular surface at a bottom of the heart chamber and a point on a roof of the heart chamber within a defined distance of a highest point on the roof in the image.

Inner valve support providing posterior ventricle blood flow impingement during atrial contraction with preselected dimensions

An implant includes an inner valve support positioned inside the implant; the heart chamber is an atrium and the side of the heart includes a ventricle, and when the implant is deployed in the atrium the inner valve support is configured to provide blood flow impingement on a posterior side of the ventricle during atrial contraction, where dimensions of the inner valve support are preselected and not determined based on metrics derived from the image.

Ellipsoid-conforming outer sizing combined with image-defined atrium/ventricle anatomical context

The implant of the second independent claim is sized according to ellipsoid height and width oversizing relative to an image-defined length and width of the heart chamber, while further defining the chamber as an atrium with a ventricle on the side of the heart, connecting the image-defined sizing framework to the specified posterior-side blood-flow impingement during atrial contraction via the inner valve support.

Across the identified independent claims, the central inventive coverage is an implant with an outer curved portion sized using an ellipsoid that conforms to the outer portion and is oversized relative to image-defined heart-chamber dimensions by predetermined percentage ranges. One independent claim further limits the implant to include an inner valve support configured to provide posterior ventricle blood flow impingement during atrial contraction with inner valve support dimensions preselected and not determined from image-derived metrics.
