Abstract

A surgical space maker device has a flexible member comprising an expandable space-making frame where at least a first frame member and a second frame member of the space-making frame are axially advanceable relative to each other.

Core Innovation

A surgical space-making device separates anatomic structures to permit use of a medical device at a region of interest by creating a space adjacent to the region of interest. The device includes a handle with independently operable first and second actuators, a shaft extending distally along an axis, and an interior lumen open at a working end at the distal end of the shaft. A space-making frame is located at the working end, where movement of the frame relative to the axis allows separation of tissue adjacent to the working end.

The space-making frame includes an arcuate frame member and a secondary frame member that are coupled together. The arcuate frame member is moveable by operation of the first actuator, and the secondary frame member is moveable by operation of the second actuator. At least the first actuator is spring-biased to a locking position by a portion of the arcuate frame member.

When the first actuator and the second actuator move the arcuate frame member and the secondary frame member in a same direction, the space-making frame moves axially relative to the working end. When the first actuator and the second actuator move the arcuate frame member and the secondary frame member relative to each other, the space-making frame expands away from the axis to an expanded profile to separate anatomic structures adjacent to the working end and create a space adjacent to the region of interest such that the medical device can be advanced through the interior lumen toward the region of interest.

Claims Coverage

Two independent claims define the core scope, centered on independently operable first and second actuators moving a coupled arcuate frame member and secondary frame member to translate axially and expand radially to create a working space through an interior lumen. The independent claims further specify a spring-biased actuator locking relationship and the causal mapping between actuator motion and axial movement of the space-making frame and radial expansion to separate tissue and permit advancement of a medical device.

Independently operable actuators coupled to a coupled arcuate and secondary frame for controlled axial movement and radial expansion

A surgical space-making device including a handle with a first actuator and a second actuator each independently operational, a shaft with an interior lumen and a working end where the lumen is open, and a space-making frame at the working end comprising an arcuate frame member moveable by operation of the first actuator and a secondary frame member moveable by operation of the second actuator, where the arcuate frame member and secondary frame member are coupled together, such that operation of the first actuator and operation of the second actuator to move the arcuate frame member and the secondary frame member in a same direction causes the space-making frame to move axially relative to the working end and operation of the first actuator and operation of the second actuator to move the arcuate frame member and the secondary frame member relative to each other causes the space-making frame to expand away from the axis to an expanded profile permitting separation of anatomic structures and allowing a medical device to be advanced through the interior lumen.

Spring-biased locking position of an actuator linked to a portion of the frame member while enabling actuator-dependent expansion to create a region-of-interest space

A surgical space-making device including independently operable actuators, a shaft with an interior lumen open at a working end, and a space-making frame comprising a first arcuate frame member and a secondary frame member, where at least the first actuator is spring-biased to a locking position by a portion of the arcuate frame member; wherein operation of the first actuator and the second actuator to move the first arcuate frame member and the secondary frame member in a single direction causes an axial movement of the space-making frame relative to the working end; and wherein operation of the first actuator and the second actuator to move the first arcuate frame member and the secondary frame member relative to each other causes the space-making frame to expand away in a radial direction from the axis of shaft to cause separation of tissue adjacent to the working end and creating a space at the region of interest such that the medical device can be advanced through the interior lumen.

Across the independent claims, the inventive coverage is directed to a space-making frame with independently actuated, coupled arcuate and secondary frame members that produce controlled axial translation when moved in a same direction and radial expansion away from the shaft axis when moved relative to each other, thereby separating tissue adjacent to the working end to create a space at a region of interest for advancing a medical device through an interior lumen, with at least the first actuator being spring-biased to a locking position by a portion of the arcuate frame member.
