Abstract

The present invention relates to a carrier for adhesive, with the carrier being configured to be attached to a surface having a topology, in particular a time variable topology, such as a part of a human or animal body. The invention further relates to a use of the carrier, to a method of activating a carrier and to a method of making a carrier.

Core Innovation

A carrier for adhesive attachment is provided, the carrier being configured to be attached to a surface and comprising a backing substrate as an interface to a payload. The carrier further comprises a patterned surface having islands present at the surface, where at least one of the islands and the backing substrate is made from a compliant material. At least a part of a free surface of the islands is coated with an ink comprising curable material.

The curable material provides cross-linking or adhesion to the material of the islands, and the ink is the same type of material as the islands or the same material as the islands in combination with one or more selected crosslinkable material types. The ink, after being coated in an uncured state on the free surface of the islands and brought into contact with a further object, is thereafter completely cured. The ink is selected to bond the islands of the carrier to the further object and thereby form a connection between the payload and the further object.

The payload is configured to determine properties of the object and/or exert a function on the object, and the ink is tailored to the respective property and/or function. This tailoring is used for enhancing the transmission of the respective property and/or function to and/or from the payload. A method of activating the carrier is also described, where the carrier includes the backing substrate, the patterned surface having islands, and compliant material for at least one of the islands and the backing substrate.

The method includes immersing the islands into an ink reservoir containing uncured ink, placing the islands with uncured ink onto an object, and curing the uncured ink to adhere or form a bond between the carrier and the object. The cured ink forms the connection between the payload and the object, and is tailored to enhance transmission of the payload-determined properties and/or payload-exerted function.

Claims Coverage

The document contains two independent claims: a carrier for adhesive attachment and a method of activating the carrier for bonding. Across these claims, the inventive concept is implemented through compliant islands on a backing substrate coated with an uncured curable ink that cross-links or adheres upon contact and curing to form a connection between a payload and an object, with the cured ink tailored to transmission of property/function signals.

Adhesive carrier with compliant islands coated with curable ink tailored for payload transmission

A carrier configured to be attached to a surface, comprising a backing substrate as an interface to a payload and a patterned surface having islands present at the surface, wherein at least one of the islands and the backing substrate is made from a compliant material, and at least a part of a free surface of the islands is coated with an ink comprising curable material. The curable material provides cross-linking or adhesion to the material of the islands, the ink being coated in an uncured state on the free surface of the islands, brought into contact with a further object, and thereafter completely cured. The ink is selected to bond the islands of the carrier to the further object to form a connection between the payload and the further object, and the ink is tailored to the respective property and/or function for enhancing the transmission of the respective property and/or function to and/or from the payload.

Method of activating carrier by immersing islands in uncured ink and curing to form payload-object connection

A method of activating a carrier for bonding to an object, where the carrier comprises a backing substrate as an interface to a payload and a patterned surface having islands present at the surface, wherein at least one of the islands and the backing substrate is made from a compliant material. The method includes immersing the islands of the carrier into an ink reservoir containing uncured ink, placing the islands of the carrier comprising the uncured ink present thereon onto an object, and curing the uncured ink to adhere or form a bond between the carrier and the object to form a connection between the payload and the object via the cured ink. The cured ink is tailored to the respective property and/or function for enhancing the transmission of the respective property and/or function to and/or from the payload.

The claim set centers on a compliant, island-patterned adhesive carrier in which an uncured curable ink on free island surfaces is cured upon contact to bond islands to an object, forming a payload-to-object connection. In both the carrier and activation method, the cured ink is selected and tailored to enhance transmission of payload-determined properties and/or payload-exerted function.

Stated Advantages

Enhancing the transmission of the respective property and/or function to and/or from the payload.

Documented Applications
