Abstract
Here is database integration in which a relational table and an analytic view are generated and configured in a relational database for acceleration and optimally populated from summarization hierarchies derived from a dimension in a multidimensional database. This approach is a new way to transfer online analytical processing (OLAP) metadata from a multidimensional database to a relational database. Shared members may cause this approach to generate a directed acyclic graph (DAG) that organizes the metadata. The OLAP content generated in the relational database has a novel data topology that is unconventional because relational data normalization strategies such as third normal form (3NF) are avoided. This novel data topology achieves unprecedented data locality of metadata in a relational database. Due to optimization techniques such as graph coloring for detection and resolution of conflicts caused by shared members, the accuracy and speed of the data integration between the two databases is increased.
Core Innovation
A method retrieves from a multidimensional database a plurality of members in a dimension, then generates a first summarization hierarchy containing a first subset of the plurality of members and a second summarization hierarchy containing a second subset. The method detects that the second summarization hierarchy contains an aggregative parent member of a shared member, and that the first summarization hierarchy contains a prototype member of the shared member. Based on these detections, the method generates, in the first summarization hierarchy, a first summarization partition that does not contain the prototype member of the shared member and a second summarization partition that contains the prototype member of the shared member.
The method then generates in a relational database, based on the first summarization partition and the second summarization partition, an analytic view that represents the first summarization hierarchy and the second summarization hierarchy. This produces a relational representation of multi-hierarchy summarization where shared members have different relationships across the hierarchies. The partitioning separates the prototype member appearance from the aggregative parent relationship for the shared member across the first and second summarization hierarchies.
The disclosed approach converts multidimensional OLAP metadata from a dimension with shared members into a relational schema by building two summarization hierarchies over subsets of dimension members. It detects conflicts where a shared member is an aggregative parent member in one summarization hierarchy and a prototype member in the other, then resolves the conflicts by creating distinct summarization partitions. The partitions are connected via a directed acyclic graph to represent the analytic view in a relational database without conventional normalization, using a non-3NF topology and co-locating multi-level, multi-hierarchy metadata in rows of a relational table.
Claims Coverage
The independent claims are directed to a method and one or more non-transitory computer-readable media instructions implementing the same method. Both independent claims include the same core set of inventive features: retrieving members, generating two summarization hierarchies from subsets, detecting a shared-member conflict between aggregative parent and prototype roles, generating corresponding summarization partitions, and generating an analytic view in a relational database representing both hierarchies.
Two summarization hierarchies with shared-member conflict detection and partition generation
retrieving from a multidimensional database a plurality of members in a dimension; generating a first summarization hierarchy that contains a first subset of the plurality of members; generating a second summarization hierarchy that contains a second subset of the plurality of members; detecting that the second summarization hierarchy contains an aggregative parent member of a shared member; detecting that the first summarization hierarchy contains a prototype member of the shared member; generating, based on said detecting that the second summarization hierarchy contains the aggregative parent member of the shared member and said detecting that the first summarization hierarchy contains the prototype member of the shared member, in the first summarization hierarchy: a first summarization partition that does not contain the prototype member of the shared member and a second summarization partition that contains the prototype member of the shared member
Relational analytic view representing both summarization hierarchies
generating in a relational database, based on said generating the first summarization partition and the second summarization partition, an analytic view that represents the first summarization hierarchy and the second summarization hierarchy
Across both independent claims, the inventive combination is generating two summarization hierarchies over subsets of members, detecting that a shared member has different roles in the hierarchies, generating summarization partitions accordingly, and generating in a relational database an analytic view representing both hierarchies.
Stated Advantages
Avoiding conventional normalization by using a non-3NF topology.
Providing accelerated OLAP query performance through the relational schema and analytic view representation.
Documented Applications
Database integration of multidimensional OLAP metadata transfer into a relational database using an analytic view representing multiple summarization hierarchies, including handling shared members with different parent and prototype roles.
