Abstract

In an infusion pump system that includes a pump that may have a user interface for pump programming, one or more smartphones or other remote control devices that interface with the infusion pump, and/or an automated insulin delivery algorithm, there is a potential conflict between commands such as boluses being programmed on multiple devices and/or calculated by the AID algorithm at the same time. In order to avoid low glucose levels that could result from delivering multiple boluses from these various sources when only one bolus is needed, systems and methods disclosed herein provide a bolus permissions and prioritization scheme that prioritizes boluses programmed with the infusion pump and one or more remote control devices and calculated by a closed loop delivery algorithm.

Core Innovation

An ambulatory infusion pump system delivers medicament to a user and includes bolus programming interfaces to enable bolus delivery programming. The system includes an infusion pump with a user interface configured to display a pump bolus programming interface, and a remote control device with a user interface configured to display a remote bolus programming interface. At least one processor associates each bolus programming interface with a priority level so that one interface is a higher priority interface and the other is a lower priority interface.

The processor automatically disables user access to the lower priority interface if the higher priority interface has been accessed. The disclosure addresses conflicting simultaneous bolus programming requests by enforcing priority-based access so that lower-priority bolus programming does not remain available when higher-priority bolus programming is active.

Priority-based enforcement is combined with user feedback and communications to restrict access, including displaying "Bolus in Progress" or "Bolus Unavailable" messages and transmitting communications to disable lower-priority device bolus screens. Lower-priority interfaces can be automatically exited, and lower-priority access can be optionally disabled for a predetermined period. In addition, delivery of automatic correction boluses may be prevented or disabled while higher-priority bolus programming is active, including in an automatic insulin delivery (AID) closed-loop algorithm context.

Claims Coverage

The independent claims are clm-00001 and clm-00011. Across these independent claims, the core claim coverage includes associating bolus programming interfaces with priority levels and automatically disabling user access to the lower-priority interface when the higher-priority interface has been accessed, with clm-00011 further defining first and second user interfaces.

Priority association between pump and remote bolus programming interfaces

associate each of the pump bolus programming interface and the remote bolus programming interface with a priority level such that one of the pump bolus programming interface and the remote bolus programming interface is a higher priority interface and the other is a lower priority interface

Automatic disabling of lower-priority interface access after higher-priority access

automatically disable user access to the lower priority interface if the higher priority interface has been accessed

Priority association between first and second bolus programming user interfaces

associate each of the first bolus programming interface and the second bolus programming interface with a priority level such that one of the first bolus programming interface and the second bolus programming interface is a higher priority interface and the other is a lower priority interface

Automatic disabling of lower-priority interface access after higher-priority access (two-interface implementation)

automatically disable user access to the lower priority interface if the higher priority interface has been accessed

The independent claims require assigning priority levels to bolus programming interfaces and automatically disabling user access to the lower-priority interface once the higher-priority interface is accessed, thereby controlling which bolus programming interface can be used at a given time.

Stated Advantages

prevents conflicting simultaneous bolus requests

reduces risk of low glucose by restricting bolus programming access

provides user feedback via messages indicating bolus status (e.g., "Bolus in Progress" / "Bolus Unavailable")

Documented Applications

ambulatory infusion pump operation with bolus programming via pump user interface and remote control device user interface

remote-vs-pump conflict scenarios involving multiple remote controllers

use with automatic insulin delivery (AID) closed-loop algorithm by disabling automatic correction bolus delivery while higher-priority bolus programming is active

examples of extending priority-based control to other pump programming features (e.g., temporary basal rate)
