Abstract

The present invention provides probiotic compositions comprising isolated bacterial strains, referred to herein as LactX, StrepX1 and StrepX3. Methods of using the compositions to increase growth rate in pigs and enhance pig production are also provided.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to swine gut microbiome instability around weaning and the need for probiotic alternatives. It is directed to probiotic compositions that comprise dried animal feed and lyophilized isolated bacterial strains, including Streptococcus strain StrepX3, which is the bacterium deposited at the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) under accession number PTA-127486.

The probiotic compositions further include additional deposited isolated strains, including Lactobacillus strain LactX and Streptococcus strain StrepX1, with their respective ATCC accession numbers. The compositions are formulated as dried and/or lyophilized forms and may include a gastrointestinal release coating to provide release in the gastrointestinal tract.

The disclosure describes direct-fed microbial use in association with an animal feed and states that administering the probiotic compositions improves pig growth performance. It also describes microbiome succession characterization and enrichment outcomes associated with administering the probiotic compositions, including enrichment of Streptococcus and Clostridiaceae and changes in gut microbiome diversity and richness.

Claims Coverage

The document provides one independent composition claim centered on a dried animal feed probiotic composition defined by a lyophilized isolated Streptococcus strain StrepX3 deposited at ATCC under a specific accession number and a minimum StrepX3 colony-forming-unit level per serving. Dependent claims add LactX and/or StrepX1, gastrointestinal release coating features, and pig administration age and CFU ranges.

Dried animal feed with lyophilized StrepX3 at ATCC PTA-127486

A composition comprising a dried animal feed and a lyophilized isolated bacterial strain comprising Streptococcus strain StrepX3, wherein StrepX3 is the bacterium deposited at ATCC under accession number PTA-127486, and wherein the composition contains at least 10^8 colony forming units of StrepX3 per serving.

Adding LactX or StrepX1 deposited strains

The composition further includes, in addition to the lyophilized isolated bacterial strain, either Lactobacillus strain LactX or Streptococcus strain StrepX1.

Gastrointestinal release coating enclosure

The composition includes bacteria that are at least partially enclosed in a coating designed to release the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

Pig administration with specified age ranges

Administering the composition to a pig at an age within one of the specified day ranges: between 1 and 61 days old, between 18 and 28 days old, or between 18 and 22 days old.

Pig dosing quantified by CFU range

The administered composition contains between 10^8 and 10^10 colony forming units of the bacterial strains.

Overall, the claims focus on probiotic compositions of dried animal feed with lyophilized deposited Streptococcus strain StrepX3 at a minimum per-serving CFU, with optional LactX and/or StrepX1, gastrointestinal release coating, and pig administration age and CFU ranges.
