Abstract
A device for collecting a physiological sample from a subject includes a lancet with a needle that is configured to puncture the subject's skin and a cartridge configured to engage with the lancet. The lancet is configured to transition the needle from an undeployed position to a deployed position in response to engagement with the cartridge, thereby allowing the needle to puncture the subject's skin.
Core Innovation
The dermal-patch system collects a physiological sample from a subject using a cartridge and a lancet with a needle. Engagement of the lancet with the cartridge applies force that automatically transitions the needle from an undeployed position to a deployed position for skin puncture, with the system also providing automatic needle retraction. A movable vacuum pin generates negative pressure to route the sample from a physiological sample well through fluid channels to an absorbent collection pad.
The cartridge includes a specimen collection pad housing, a sample well, and a connecting channel, wherein the collection pad is configured to be removed for analysis. Described embodiments provide visual access and pipette access to the collection pad. In addition, the dermal-patch system provides QR-code linkage to an electronic medical record database.
Claims Coverage
The claims identify three inventive features corresponding to three independent claims directed to a sample-collection device, a method for obtaining a physiological sample, and a lancet for use with a dermal-patch cartridge.
Cartridge-engaged sample-collection device
A device for collecting a physiological sample includes a lancet having a needle configured to puncture the subject's skin and a cartridge configured to engage with the lancet. Engagement applies force that automatically transitions the needle from an undeployed position to a deployed position. Dependent claims add a sample well, a channel, a collection pad and housing, pad attachment or removal, a lancet aperture, and viewing apertures.
Method for obtaining a physiological sample
The method comprises attaching a dermal-patch system cartridge onto the subject's skin and coupling a lancet with a needle to the cartridge. The coupling applies force that causes the needle to automatically draw the physiological sample. Dependent claims specify automatic skin piercing and needle retraction, collection on a pad within the cartridge, and removal of the pad.
Lancet with automatic needle deployment
The lancet includes a housing configured for engagement with the cartridge, a needle disposed within the housing, and a mechanism that retains the needle in the housing when the lancet is not engaged with the cartridge. Engagement applies force that automatically deploys the needle for skin puncture. Dependent claims add automatic retraction, injection and retraction springs, and an internal sleeve that retains the needle in an undeployed position.
The three independent claims cover the cartridge-engaged sample-collection device, the method of obtaining a physiological sample, and the lancet mechanism for retaining and automatically deploying the needle. Dependent claims further specify sample collection components as well as needle deployment, retraction, and retention features.
