Abstract
Methods, systems, and devices for determining blood pressure based on a relative timing of pulses are described. In some implementations, a system may include one or more wearable devices configured to measure heartbeats at different locations on the body of a user. The different locations may be different physiological locations (e.g., chest and finger/wrist), and/or different penetration depths at the same physiological location. The system may use the components of the wearable devices to acquire physiological data and to observe one or more heartbeats of the user over a time period. The system may compare pulse observation times observed at the different locations, and may determine a blood pressure metric for the user based on a relative timing of when heartbeats are observed at the different locations.
Core Innovation
The invention provides a system for measuring blood pressure using a first wearable device and a second wearable device positioned at a first physiological location and a second physiological location of a body. Each wearable device includes a motion sensor and is configured to measure photoplethysmogram (PPG) data using one or more optical components, together with movement data associated with physical activity of the user.
Using the acquired physiological data, the system determines a first pulse observation time of a heartbeat at the first physiological location based at least in part on movement data, and determines a second pulse observation time at the second physiological location based at least in part on movement data. The system then determines a pulse transmit time associated with the heartbeat, an additional heartbeat, or both based at least in part on a comparison between the first pulse observation time and the second pulse observation time.
The system determines a motion state of the user based at least in part on the first movement data and the second movement data, and determines a blood pressure metric based at least in part on the pulse transmit time and the motion state. The system transmits a signal causing a graphical user interface of a user device to display a blood pressure alert when the blood pressure metric deviates from a baseline blood pressure metric, and to display an instruction for the user to adjust one or more characteristics of the wearable devices for calibrating the blood pressure metric.
Claims Coverage
The partial content includes two independent claims that define a system and a method. Across these independent claims, the inventive features center on measuring PPG and movement at two physiological locations, deriving pulse observation times and a pulse transmit time from their comparison, determining a motion state, computing a blood pressure metric based on pulse transmit time and motion state, and generating a GUI blood pressure alert with calibration instruction tied to deviation from a baseline blood pressure metric.
Two wearable devices at different physiological locations with PPG and motion
The system includes a first wearable device at a first physiological location with a motion sensor and configured to measure first PPG data using one or more first optical components, and a second wearable device at a second physiological location with a motion sensor and configured to measure second PPG data using one or more second optical components.
Pulse observation times determined using movement data at each location
The system acquires first physiological data including first PPG data and first movement data, determines a first pulse observation time based at least in part on the first movement data, acquires second physiological data including second PPG data and second movement data, and determines a second pulse observation time indicating a heartbeat, an additional heartbeat, or both at the second physiological location.
Pulse transmit time based on comparison of pulse observation times
The system determines a pulse transmit time associated with the heartbeat, the additional heartbeat, or both based at least in part on a comparison between the first pulse observation time and the second pulse observation time.
Motion-state-aware blood pressure metric and GUI alert with calibration instruction
The system determines a motion state based at least in part on the first movement data and the second movement data, determines a blood pressure metric based at least in part on the pulse transmit time and the motion state, and transmits a signal configured to cause a graphical user interface to display a blood pressure alert based at least in part on the blood pressure metric deviating from a baseline blood pressure metric and an instruction to adjust one or more characteristics of the first wearable device, the second wearable device, or both for calibrating the blood pressure metric.
Method steps for motion-state-aware blood pressure measurement using two wearable devices
The method measures first physiological data via a first wearable device including PPG data and movement data, determines a first pulse observation time based at least in part on movement data, measures second physiological data via a second wearable device including PPG data and movement data and determines a second pulse observation time, determines a pulse transmit time based at least in part on comparison between the first and second pulse observation times, determines a motion state based at least in part on the movement data, determines a blood pressure metric based at least in part on the pulse transmit time and the motion state, and transmits a signal configured to cause a graphical user interface to display a blood pressure alert based at least in part on deviation from a baseline blood pressure metric and an instruction for calibrating by adjusting one or more characteristics of the wearable devices.
Both independent claims require two wearable devices at different physiological locations measuring PPG and movement, determining pulse observation times using movement data, comparing those times to determine pulse transmit time, determining a motion state, computing a blood pressure metric based on pulse transmit time and motion state, and presenting a graphical user interface blood pressure alert with an instruction to adjust wearable characteristics for calibrating the blood pressure metric when the metric deviates from a baseline.
