Abstract
An apparatus comprising a pump configured to deliver insulin, an input configured to receive blood glucose data, a user interface, and a controller communicatively coupled to the pump, the input, and the user interface. The controller includes a blood glucose data module to compare the blood glucose data to a target blood glucose level for an insulin pump user. The controller is configured to present a question related to the blood glucose level via the user interface when the blood glucose level is different than the target blood glucose level, receive a response to the question via the user interface, and present a recommended user action based at least in part on the response. Other devices, systems, and methods are disclosed.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to an insulin pump system in which a controller receives sensor glucose data representative of a blood glucose level of a user. The controller monitors the sensor glucose data while a basal rate of insulin is being delivered to the user, compares the sensor glucose data to a target low glucose level, and determines a rate of change of the blood glucose level from the sensor glucose data.
Based on monitoring the rate of change, the system determines that the glucose level is at risk of going below the target low glucose level due to the basal rate of insulin being delivered, even though the sensor glucose data does not indicate that the glucose level is below the target low glucose level. In this case, the system provides a notification indicating the risk of going below the target low glucose level or indicating that a future glucose level is likely to be below the target low glucose level.
The invention further incorporates using the rate-of-change determination to select and present recommended user actions. The recommendations can include corrective-action content such as carbohydrate ingestion and/or presenting a recommendation to reduce the basal rate of insulin, and the determination may be implemented by applying one or more rules to the rate of change.
Claims Coverage
The independent claims are clm-00001, clm-00008, and clm-00015, and they collectively cover using sensor-derived rate of change, monitored continuously, to assess low-glucose risk relative to a target low glucose level during delivery of a basal rate of insulin, and then providing a notification and/or implementing a corrective action based on that risk. Three core inventive themes recur: rate-of-change monitoring, low-glucose risk assessment even when current sensor glucose data does not yet show being below the target, and notification or corrective action responsive to that risk.
Rate-of-change-based low glucose risk during basal delivery
Receiving sensor glucose data representative of a blood glucose level of a user; monitoring the sensor glucose data while a basal rate of insulin is being delivered to the user; comparing the sensor glucose data to a target low glucose level; determining a rate of change of the blood glucose level of the user from the sensor glucose data; generally continuously monitoring the rate of change; determining based on the monitoring of the rate of change that, although the sensor glucose data does not indicate that the glucose level of the user is below the target low glucose level, the glucose level of the user is at risk of going below the target low glucose level due to the basal rate of insulin being delivered to the user; and providing a notification indicating the risk of going below the target low glucose level.
Implementing corrective action for low glucose risk inferred from rate of change
Receiving sensor glucose data representative of a blood glucose level of a user; monitoring the sensor glucose data while a basal rate of insulin is being delivered to the user; comparing the sensor glucose data to a target low glucose level; determining a rate of change of the blood glucose level of the user from the sensor glucose data; generally continuously monitoring the rate of change; determining, based on the monitoring of the rate of change that, although the sensor glucose data does not indicate that the glucose level of the user is below the target low glucose level, the glucose level of the user is at risk of going below the target low glucose level due to the basal rate of insulin being delivered to the user; and implementing a corrective action in response to the risk of going below the target low glucose level.
Predicting future low glucose and notifying based on rate of change
Receiving sensor glucose data representative of a blood glucose level of a user; comparing the sensor glucose data to a target low glucose level; determining a rate of change of the blood glucose level of the user from the sensor glucose data; generally continuously monitoring the rate of change; determining based on the monitoring of the rate of change that a future glucose level of the user is likely to be below the target low glucose level; and providing a notification indicating the future glucose level is likely to be below the target low glucose level.
Across clm-00001, clm-00008, and clm-00015, the claims focus on using sensor-derived rate of change to determine low-glucose risk relative to a target low glucose level and then communicating that risk via notification and/or acting via a corrective action. Dependent claims further narrow notification content and corrective actions, including corrective-action recommendations such as ingesting carbohydrates and optionally presenting a recommendation to reduce the basal rate of insulin, and they specify that rule-based processing can be used to determine risk from the rate of change.
Stated Advantages
Provides a notification indicating risk of going below a target low glucose level based on rate of change, even when sensor glucose data does not yet indicate being below the target low glucose level.
Informs the user that a future glucose level is likely to be below the target low glucose level based on continuously monitored rate of change.
Enables corrective action to be implemented in response to risk of going below the target low glucose level inferred from the rate of change.
Documented Applications
Insulin pump operation for monitoring sensor glucose data during delivery of a basal rate of insulin and notifying or acting when rate of change indicates risk or likely future low glucose relative to a target low glucose level.
User-facing low-glucose risk communication via a notification, including corrective-action messaging such as recommending carbohydrate ingestion and/or presenting a recommendation to reduce the basal insulin rate.
