Abstract
A multi-beveled needle point geometry for hypodermic needles such as pen needles. A proximal bevel is formed at a first angle of inclination, a pair of intermediate bevels at a second angle of inclination, and a pair of distal bevels at a third angle of inclination and differing angles of rotation. The second angle of inclination is substantially different than the first angle of inclination to define a marked apex at the intersections between the proximal bevel and the intermediate bevels. At least one smooth transition is typically provided between adjacent bevels, between a bevel and an outer surface of the needle, and/or between a bevel and the lumen of the needle.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to an improved hypodermic/pen needle multi-bevel distal tip geometry. The needle includes a cannula with a longitudinal axis and an elongate lumen extending axially therethrough, and a multi-beveled point at the distal end. The multi-beveled point includes a proximal bevel, a pair of intermediate bevels, and a pair of distal bevels formed with different angles of inclination relative to the longitudinal axis, and the distal bevels have angles of rotation relative to a vertical axis that differ from one another.
A marked apex is formed at the intersections between the proximal bevel and the intermediate bevels, and between the intermediate bevels and the distal bevels. Radiused or smooth transition zones are provided between adjacent bevels, and between the bevels and the lumen inner surface and/or the cannula outer surface, to avoid sharp edge discontinuities. The rotational angles and the inclination relationships are structured so that the bevel regions define the distal point geometry.
Additional embodiments include a three-bevel tip geometry. Further embodiments describe a back bevel on the rotationally opposite side of the cannula from the distal bevels, forming a chisel-tip leading edge. Manufacturing and finishing embodiments include grinding/bead blasting/cleaning/electropolishing/passivation to achieve the described tip geometry and transition zones.
Claims Coverage
The provided independent claim covers a needle with a multi-beveled distal point defined by proximal, intermediate, and distal bevel angles of inclination, different distal bevel rotational angles, and rounded smooth transition zones between bevel regions. The dependent claims refine the same geometry by adding further quantitative angle constraints, defining smooth transition zone locations relative to surfaces, and adding a back bevel/chisel-tip feature and a pen-needle-with-injector-pen context.
Multi-beveled distal point with proximal, intermediate, and distal bevel angles and differing distal rotations
A needle in which the multi-beveled point includes a proximal bevel formed at a first angle of inclination relative to the longitudinal axis, a pair of intermediate bevels formed at a second angle of inclination relative to the longitudinal axis, and a pair of distal bevels formed at a third angle of inclination, wherein the pair of distal bevels have angles of rotation relative to a vertical axis which differ from one another.
Smooth transition zones and rounded third smooth transition zone between bevel regions
The proximal bevel and the pair of intermediate bevels have a pair of transverse edges therebetween, and the pair of intermediate bevels and the pair of distal bevels have first and second smooth transition zones therebetween, and the pair of distal bevels have a third smooth transition zone therebetween, wherein the third smooth transition zone is rounded.
Pen-needle configuration for replaceable use with an injector pen
A needle in combination with a hub affixed to the needle to form a pen needle for replaceable use with an injector pen.
Smooth peripheral transition zones formed between bevel regions and inner/outer surfaces
The needle includes at least one smooth peripheral transition zone formed between the bevel regions and the needle lumen inner surface, the cannula outer surface, or both.
Back bevel on rotationally opposite side forming chisel-tip geometry
The needle further includes a back bevel formed on a rotationally opposite side of the cannula from the distal bevels, wherein the back bevel is ground into a wall thickness of the cannula to define a chisel-tip geometry at a tip of the multi-beveled point.
Across the provided claim set, the inventive coverage focuses on a specific multi-bevel distal point geometry with defined proximal/intermediate/distal inclination angles, differing distal rotational angles, and rounded smooth transition zones between bevel regions. Refinements add location-specific smooth peripheral transition zones, a rotationally opposite back bevel that forms a chisel-tip geometry, and a pen-needle assembly context for replaceable use with an injector pen.
