Abstract
An ambulatory infusion pump can include a maximum bolus override procedure. When a bolus amount greater than a maximum bolus amount is requested, the ambulatory infusion pump can provide an alert indicating that the bolus amount requested exceeds the maximum bolus amount. If a user confirms the request in response to the alert, the bolus amount can be delivered to the user. The bolus amount delivered in response to the confirmation can be a first portion of the bolus amount. A reminder can then be provided that a second portion of the bolus amount that is a remaining portion of the requested bolus amount was also requested. If a second confirmation is received in response to the alert, the second portion of the bolus amount can also be delivered to the user.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to an ambulatory infusion pump system having a delivery mechanism adapted to facilitate a delivery of insulin to a user, and a user interface adapted to receive input data from the user. A memory is adapted to store a maximum bolus limit defining a maximum bolus amount the user can operate the pump to deliver at any one time. At least one processor is operably connected to the delivery mechanism, the user interface and the memory.
When the user manually enters a request for a single, user-requested bolus amount greater than the maximum bolus limit, the processor executes a maximum bolus override procedure. The override procedure provides a first alert warning the user that the single bolus amount exceeds the maximum, receives a first confirmation, and causes the delivery mechanism to deliver a first portion of the single user-requested bolus amount that is no more than the maximum bolus limit.
After the first portion is delivered, the processor provides a second alert reminding the user that a second portion comprising a remainder of the single user-requested bolus amount was requested. The processor receives a second confirmation to deliver the second portion and causes the delivery mechanism to deliver the second portion in response to the second confirmation. The processor is configured to automatically divide the amount into a first portion and a second portion, and delivery of a portion may be inhibited based on confirmation timing.
Claims Coverage
The document includes three independent claims directed to an ambulatory infusion pump system that enforces a maximum bolus limit and supports a maximum bolus override by alerting the user, obtaining confirmations, and delivering a bolus that exceeds the limit in multiple portions. Across the independent claims, the inventive structure is organized around a stored maximum bolus limit, a two-stage override workflow, user interface alerts and reminders, and confirmation-based delivery.
Stored maximum bolus limit in an ambulatory insulin infusion pump
The processor is connected to a delivery mechanism, a user interface, and a memory adapted to store a maximum bolus limit defining a maximum bolus amount the user can operate the pump to deliver at any one time.
Maximum bolus override procedure with first alert and first confirmation
When the user manually enters a request for a single, user-requested bolus amount greater than the maximum bolus limit, the processor provides a first alert warning that the requested amount exceeds the maximum bolus limit; receives a first confirmation in response to the first alert; and causes the delivery mechanism to deliver a first portion of the single user-requested bolus amount that is no more than the maximum bolus limit.
Two-stage override with second alert and second confirmation for a remainder portion
After the first portion is delivered, the processor provides a second alert reminding the user that a second portion comprising a remainder of the single user-requested bolus amount was requested; receives a second confirmation to deliver the second portion; and causes the delivery mechanism to deliver the second portion in response to the second confirmation.
Automatically dividing a user programmed bolus into first and second portions
The processor is configured to determine that an amount of a user programmed bolus is greater than a maximum bolus amount; automatically divide the amount into a first portion and a second portion, where the first portion is no more than the maximum bolus amount; and deliver the first portion to the user.
Reminder and confirmation-based delivery of the second portion
The processor provides a reminder that the second portion of the user programmed bolus is remaining and delivers the second portion upon receiving a confirmation in response to the reminder.
Overall, the independent claims cover an ambulatory infusion pump system that uses a stored maximum bolus limit and a two-stage override workflow. The system warns the user via a user interface with at least a first alert and a second alert or reminder, requires first and second confirmations, and delivers the portions such that the first portion is no more than the maximum while the second portion is delivered after confirmation.
Stated Advantages
Prevents a user-requested bolus amount exceeding the maximum bolus limit from being delivered without the maximum bolus override procedure, including user alerts and confirmations.
Allows delivery of a larger user-requested bolus amount in accordance with the maximum bolus override procedure by delivering a first portion no more than the maximum and then delivering a remainder after a second confirmation.
Documented Applications
An ambulatory insulin infusion pump for operating insulin delivery with enforcement of a maximum bolus limit and support for a maximum bolus override when a requested bolus exceeds the stored maximum.
