Abstract
Methods, apparatuses, and systems for determining a peritoneal transport status of a patient based on mass analyzing low volumes of peritoneal dialysis (PD) effluent to generate patient information that may be evaluated using PD effluent fingerprints to determine peritoneal transport characteristics of the patient are described. For example, in one embodiment, a method of determining a transport status of a dialysis patient may include obtaining a volume of peritoneal dialysis (PD) effluent of the dialysis patient, generating patient information via mass analysis of the volume of PD effluent, and determining patient profile information based on evaluating the patient information with a profile library, the patient profile information comprising a peritoneal transport status classification. Other embodiments are described.
Core Innovation
The invention determines a peritoneal transport status classification of a dialysis patient by obtaining a volume of peritoneal dialysis (PD) effluent and generating patient information via mass analysis of the volume of PD effluent. The patient information is compared to a profile library containing mass analysis information of a population of patients with known peritoneal transport status classifications, which are used as a baseline to determine patient profile information. The patient profile information comprises the peritoneal transport status classification for the dialysis patient.
The disclosed approach further includes repeating the mass analysis and corresponding population mass analyses of corresponding volumes of PD effluent in a periodic manner over a predetermined time period. The classification comprises peritoneal transport status categories associated with solute transport characteristics, including high, high-average, low-average, or low transporters. The mass analysis can be performed as LC-MS or MS, and the profile library can include molecular fingerprints and mass-analysis information.
The invention also encompasses integration into treatment decisioning by using the peritoneal transport status classification to determine a dialysis prescription. An apparatus aspect stores instructions and a profile library, generates patient information via mass analysis of a volume of PD effluent, and determines patient profile information by comparing at least one unknown metabolite in the patient information with at least one of the plurality of unknown metabolites in the profile library. The resulting patient profile information comprises the peritoneal transport status classification.
Claims Coverage
The partial content provides two independent claims: one method for determining peritoneal transport status via mass analysis and profile-library comparison, and one apparatus for performing the same comparison using stored instructions and a profile library. The inventive features focus on mass analysis of a volume of PD effluent, comparison against a population profile library baseline, determining transport-status classification, periodic repetition, and apparatus-based implementation using stored metabolite information.
Mass analysis of PD effluent for patient information
Obtaining a volume of peritoneal dialysis (PD) effluent of the dialysis patient and generating patient information via mass analysis of the volume of PD effluent of the dialysis patient.
Population profile library baseline comparison to determine transport status
Determining patient profile information by comparing the patient information with a profile library of mass analysis information of a population of patients with known peritoneal transport status classifications used as a baseline, where the patient profile information comprises the peritoneal transport status classification for the dialysis patient.
Periodic repetition over a predetermined time period
The mass analysis information of the population includes mass analyses of corresponding volumes of PD effluent for each of the patients in the population, the mass analysis for each of the patients in the population being repeated in a periodic manner over a predetermined time period.
Instrumented apparatus comparing unknown metabolites to profile library
Storing a profile library of mass analysis information of patients with known peritoneal transport status classifications, the profile library including mass analysis information for a plurality of unknown metabolites, and executing instructions to determine patient profile information based on comparing at least one unknown metabolite in the patient information with at least one of the plurality of unknown metabolites of the profile library, where the patient profile information comprises a peritoneal transport status classification.
Across the independent claims, the core coverage is the generation of patient information by mass analysis of PD effluent and the determination of peritoneal transport status classification by comparing that information to a population-based profile library baseline, with an apparatus embodiment that performs the metabolite comparison using stored profile-library data.
