Abstract

Fluid communication devices and supporting structures may be provided for use with intraosseous devices. Apparatus and methods may also be provided to communicate fluids with an intraosseous device.

Core Innovation

The disclosed invention provides an apparatus for supporting an intraosseous device disposed at a target site in a patient. The apparatus includes an inner support having a bore extending therethrough, where the bore is configured to receive a portion of the intraosseous device. An outer support receives a portion of the inner support and includes an adjustable inner diameter.

The inner support and outer support include complementary engagement portions that secure the inner support in place against longitudinal and rotational displacement relative to the outer support. Specifically, an outer surface of the inner support includes a first engagement portion including at least one groove, and an inner surface of the outer support includes a second engagement portion including at least one tooth. Reduction of the inner diameter of the outer support secures the inner support by causing the at least one tooth to protrude into the at least one groove so the tooth engages the groove to prevent displacement.

In some configurations, the outer support is formed from flexible material and is movable between a first position and a second position. When in the second position, the outer support defines a bore having an elliptical-shaped cross section to secure the inner support. Release and/or locking behavior is achieved through the adjustable inner diameter and engagement geometry.

Claims Coverage

The partial content provides two independent claims: clm-00001 and clm-00012. Together, the inventive features center on an inner support with a through bore and an outer support with an adjustable inner diameter that uses tooth-and-groove engagement to secure the inner support and the intraosseous device against longitudinal and rotational displacement, with clm-00012 additionally requiring a flexible outer support movable to form an elliptical-shaped bore in a second position.

Adjustable inner-diameter outer support with tooth-and-groove engagement

An inner support includes a bore extending therethrough configured to receive a portion of the intraosseous device, and an outer support includes an adjustable inner diameter configured to receive a portion of the inner support, where an outer surface of the inner support includes a first engagement portion including at least one groove and an inner surface of the outer support includes a second engagement portion including at least one tooth, and the first and second engagement portions engage to secure the inner support against longitudinal and rotational displacement.

Flexible outer support movable to form an elliptical-shaped bore

An inner support includes a bore extending therethrough configured to receive a portion of the intraosseous device, and an outer support includes an adjustable inner diameter configured to receive a portion of the inner support, where first and second engagement portions engage to secure the inner support against longitudinal and rotational displacement, the outer support is formed from flexible material, the outer support is movable between a first position configured to receive the inner support and a second position configured to secure the inner support, and the outer support defines a bore having an elliptical-shaped cross section when the outer support is in the second position.

Across the provided independent claims, the claim coverage is directed to securing an intraosseous device using an inner support bore and an outer support with an adjustable inner diameter that cooperates through groove-and-tooth engagement to resist longitudinal and rotational displacement. The second independent claim additionally requires a flexible outer support that is movable to a second position to define an elliptical-shaped cross section for securing the inner support.
