Abstract
Interface systems for directing communication between an individual and a plurality of external devices using an external system control unit, where the individual has a neural interface device having an electrode component electrically coupled with a transmitter/receiver component.
Core Innovation
The invention provides an interface system for use by an individual that includes a neural interface device having an electrode component and a transmitter/receiver component. The electrode component is configured to detect a brain signal from a brain of the individual, and the transmitter/receiver component is configured to transmit an electronic signal representative of the brain signal. A processor applies one or more algorithms to decode the electronic signal and determines whether the electronic signal is representative of an intentional neural brain signal generated by the individual.
The interface system further includes a signal control unit with a housing structure that is physically separate from the neural interface device and is configured to be portable. The signal control unit houses a power supply, electronic communications circuitry, and a processor. Upon determining that the electronic signal is representative of an intentional neural brain signal, the processor produces an output signal.
The electronic communications circuitry is configured to provide a plurality of wireless electronic communication modalities for electronic transfer communication of the output signal to a plurality of external devices. At least two wireless electronic communication modalities are different, and the electronic communications circuitry also performs electronic exchange of device data with one or more of the plurality of external devices, where the device data is generated by at least one of the plurality of external devices. The signal control unit selects separate communication modalities based on which of the plurality of external devices is connected to the signal control unit.
Claims Coverage
Independent claim coverage includes three independent claims. The core coverage is the portable, physically separate signal control unit that decodes intentional neural brain signals and transfers an output signal to multiple external devices using multiple different wireless electronic communication modalities, including electronic exchange of device data and modality selection based on connected devices.
Portable physically separate signal control unit for neural decoding
A signal control unit comprising a housing structure that is physically separate from the neural interface device and is configured to be portable, wherein a power supply, an electronic communications circuitry and a processor are each housed with the housing structure.
Algorithmic decoding of intentional neural brain signal
The processor is configured to apply one or more algorithms to decode the electronic signal from the transmitter/receiver component and is also configured to produce an output signal upon determining that the electronic signal is representative of an intentional neural brain signal generated by the individual.
Multiple different wireless modalities with device-data exchange
The electronic communications circuitry is configured to provide a plurality of wireless electronic communication modalities for electronic transfer communication of the output signal to a plurality of external devices, wherein at least two wireless electronic communication modalities are different and wherein the electronic communications circuitry is also configured for electronic exchange of a device data with one or more of the plurality of external devices, where the device data is generated by at least one of the plurality of external devices.
Communication modality selection based on connected external devices
The signal control unit is configured to select a plurality of separate communication modalities based on which of the plurality of external devices is connected to the signal control unit.
Overall, the independent claims cover an interface system that detects brain signals with a neural interface device, decodes intentional neural brain signals using algorithms in a portable, physically separate signal control unit, and transfers an output signal to multiple external devices using multiple different wireless communication modalities while exchanging device data and selecting modalities based on which external devices are connected.
