Abstract

An illuminated surgical retractor including a handle, a blade including a curved portion at a proximal end thereof and a main blade portion extending from the curved portion, with the curved portion being disposed between the handle and the main blade portion, and an illumination assembly including at least one direct light source positioned to emit light toward a distal end of the blade and a cover partially enclosing the at least one direct light source, with the cover extending along the curved portion of the blade.

Core Innovation

The invention provides an illuminated surgical retractor comprising a handle and a blade with a curved portion disposed between the handle and a main blade portion, and a lip at a distal end of the blade. The illumination assembly includes at least one direct light source positioned to emit light toward a distal end of the blade, with the blade arranged to surround the illumination assembly at least along opposite vertical sides.

The illumination assembly includes a cover partially enclosing the at least one direct light source, and the cover extends along the curved portion of the blade. A snap-fit interface is formed between the cover and the blade by configuring the cover to snap fit into a recessed cavity of the blade, with the recessed cavity including a plurality of slots and the cover including a plurality of corresponding tabs.

In a related configuration, the curved portion includes a recessed cavity, and the cover and at least a portion of the at least one direct light source are configured to be fitted within the recessed cavity. The illumination assembly is positioned to emit light toward the distal end of the blade, and the cover is configured to snap fit into the recessed cavity in the curved portion using tabs and slots.

Claims Coverage

The provided claim set includes two independent claims. The independents share an illumination assembly that uses a cover and direct light source aimed toward the distal end of the blade, with a snap-fit cover-to-blade engagement into a recessed cavity using slots and corresponding tabs.

Illuminated retractor with blade surrounding illumination assembly

An illuminated surgical retractor comprising a handle and a blade including a curved portion at a proximal end, a main blade portion extending from the curved portion, and a lip at a distal end, with an illumination assembly comprising at least one direct light source positioned to emit light toward a distal end of the blade and the blade surrounding the illumination assembly at least along opposite vertical sides.

Cover partially enclosing direct light source and extending along curved portion

The illumination assembly includes a cover partially enclosing the at least one direct light source, wherein the cover extends along the curved portion of the blade, and wherein the at least one direct light source is positioned closer to the proximal end of the blade than to a distal end of the blade.

Snap-fit cover to recessed cavity using slots and corresponding tabs

The cover is configured to snap fit into a recessed cavity of the blade, wherein the recessed cavity includes a plurality of slots and the cover includes a plurality of corresponding tabs, each tab being configured to snap fit into a corresponding slot.

Illumination assembly cover and direct light source fitted within recessed cavity

An illuminated surgical retractor comprising a handle and a blade including a curved portion at a proximal end, a main blade portion extending from the curved portion, and a lip at a distal end, with an illumination assembly comprising at least one direct light source positioned to emit light toward a distal end of the blade and a cover partially enclosing the at least one direct light source, wherein the curved portion includes a recessed cavity and the cover and at least a portion of the at least one direct light source are configured to be fitted within the recessed cavity.

Snap-fit engagement of cover into recessed cavity using slots and corresponding tabs

The cover is configured to snap fit into the recessed cavity in the curved portion, wherein the recessed cavity includes a plurality of slots and the cover includes a plurality of corresponding tabs, each tab configured to snap fit into a corresponding slot.

Across the independent claims, the core coverage is the combination of an illuminated surgical retractor with a blade having a curved portion and distal lip, an illumination assembly using at least one direct light source aimed toward the distal end, and a cover that partially encloses the light source and snap-fits into a recessed cavity in the curved portion using slots and corresponding tabs.
