Abstract
A surgical retractor, comprising a handle, a blade extending from the handle, wherein the handle has an ergonomic construction configured for hand-held use of the retractor, and wherein the handle is configured to attach to one or more of a fixed frame and a fixed arm of a surgical positioning device.
Core Innovation
The invention provides an illuminated surgical retractor having a handle and a blade extending from the handle, where the handle has an ergonomic construction configured for hand-held use. The handle includes a main portion and a curved distal end portion, and the curved distal end portion provides a recess configured to receive a portion of a mounting adapter for engagement.
A mounting adapter is configured to releasably engage with the handle, and when engaged, the mounting adapter is oriented substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the curved distal end portion. The mounting adapter is configured to directly attach to a fixed arm of a surgical positioning device, or to one or more of a fixed frame and a fixed arm of the surgical positioning device, so that the retractor is used in a surgical holding system.
The blade extends substantially perpendicularly from a longitudinal axis of the main portion in a first direction, while the curved distal end portion extends at an acute angle from the longitudinal axis of the main portion in a second direction opposite of the first direction. In some embodiments, the blade includes at least one channel forming an enclosed passage between a first opening adjacent a proximal end portion and a second opening adjacent a distal end portion.
A smoke evacuation adapter releasably connects to the channel and fluidly connects it to a suction source. An illumination assembly includes at least one direct light source provided on the blade, and one or more electrical components housed in the handle.
Claims Coverage
The independent claims cover three inventive features: an ergonomically constructed hand-held surgical retractor with a handle recess and a mounting adapter that releasably engages the handle and directly attaches to a fixed arm of a surgical positioning device with specified orientation; a spinal surgical assembly with a screw passing through a channel in the blade to secure the retractor to a bone or a vertebra; and an illuminated retractor with a direct light source on the blade and electrical components housed in the handle.
Releasable mounting adapter engagement with ergonomic handle recess and fixed-arm alignment
A surgical retractor comprising a handle and a blade extending from the handle, with a mounting adapter configured to releasably engage the handle. The handle has an ergonomic construction configured for hand-held use, includes a recess configured to receive a portion of the mounting adapter, and has a main portion and a curved distal end portion that provides the recess. The mounting adapter is configured to directly attach to a fixed arm of a surgical positioning device and, when engaged, is oriented substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the curved distal end portion.
Channel through blade for screw-based fixation in a spinal surgical assembly
A spinal surgical assembly comprising a surgical retractor and a screw having a shaft and a threaded end. The blade includes at least one channel forming an enclosed passage between a first opening adjacent a proximal end portion and a second opening adjacent a distal end portion, and the screw is configured to pass through the channel to secure the surgical retractor to a bone or a vertebra.
Illumination assembly with direct light source on blade and electrical components housed in handle
A surgical retractor comprising a handle, a blade, a mounting adapter configured to releasably engage the handle, and an illumination assembly including at least one direct light source on the blade and one or more electrical components housed in the handle. The handle is configured for hand-held use and to attach to one or more of a fixed frame and a fixed arm of a surgical positioning device via the mounting adapter.
The claim coverage centers on releasable mounting adapter engagement with an ergonomic handle recess and defined orientation, channel-based screw fixation in a spinal surgical assembly, and illumination with a direct light source on the blade and electrical components in the handle.
Stated Advantages
Reduced inventory/cost
Improved illumination direction with reduced glare/heat concerns
Documented Applications
Spinal surgery using a screw/shaft passed through a blade channel to secure the retractor to vertebrae.
