Abstract

Disclosed herein are nanoscale field effect transistors (NFETs), e.g., graphene based field effect transistors (GFETs), that do not have physical gates. Instead, they are gated by polar fluids. Systems and methods using such transistors are also disclosed.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a wearable biosensing system using a gate-free nanoscale field-effect transistor concept in which a multi-terminal structure on a substrate is transformed into an active device by a polar-fluid induced gate terminal. A nanoscale material layer arranged on the substrate serves as a channel connecting at least two terminals, and when a polar fluid released from the subject interacts with a surface of the channel, a gate voltage is induced by the polar fluid without using a conventional physical gate.

The detector receives a voltage output or a current output from the multi-terminal structure and associates the output with a concentration of one or more target analytes in the polar fluid. The sensor platform is coupled to a digital platform configured to receive the voltage output or current output associated with analyte concentration, and the system is configured to be in proximity to the subject for wearable sensing.

The disclosure further specifies that the nanoscale material layer can comprise graphene or other nanoscale materials, and that the sensor can include optional receptor layers for binding target analytes. The combination of polar-fluid induced gating and digital readout is presented as enabling detection of analytes in subject-released polar fluids such as sweat or blood.

Claims Coverage

The document provides one independent claim directed to a wearable biosensing system using a polar-fluid induced gate terminal to activate a nanoscale multi-terminal channel, together with a detector that converts voltage or current output into analyte concentration. Dependent claims further refine selectable nanoscale channel materials, receptor or recognition element options, and an expanded target analyte scope.

Wearable biosensing system with polar-fluid induced gating

A biosensing system having a sensor with a multi-terminal structure on a substrate, where a nanoscale material layer arranged on the substrate as a channel connecting at least two terminals is activated when a polar fluid released from the subject interacts with a surface of the channel to create a polar fluid induced gate terminal that induces a gate voltage, transforming the multi-terminal structure into an active device.

Detector mapping voltage or current to analyte concentration

A detector comprising a digital platform configured to receive a voltage output or a current output from the multi-terminal structure, where the voltage output or the current output is associated with a concentration of one or more target analytes in the polar fluid.

Overall, the independent claim coverage centers on activating a nanoscale channel multi-terminal structure using a polar-fluid induced gate terminal created by polar fluid from a subject, and using a digital-platform detector to relate the resulting voltage or current output to analyte concentration in that polar fluid.
