Abstract

The present disclosure provides methods of improving cardiac function, including delivering a band to a ventricle of a heart via at least one catheter; guiding the band through the heart to form a loop; pulling walls of the ventricle of the heart inwards by tightening the band following formation of the loop; following tightening, locking the band in the loop; and removing the at least one catheter from the heart.

Core Innovation

The disclosed invention provides a method of improving cardiac function by delivering a band to a ventricle of a heart via at least one catheter. The band is guided through the heart to form a loop, and the ventricular walls of the heart are pulled inwards by tightening the band following formation of the loop. After tightening, the band is locked in the loop, and the at least one catheter is removed from the heart.

The described guidance includes embodiments in which the band is guided through spaces among trabeculae and/or around papillary muscles, while forming a single loop. In further embodiments, the band or a portion of the band is a hollow tube, and the loop is tightened to pull papillary muscles toward each other and/or pull ventricular walls inward. The method also includes locking the tightened loop using locking mechanisms such as a pull-string with a transcatheter suture lock or a self-locking pull-string.

In additional embodiments, tightening is carried out to a predefined or preferred loop circumference, and the delivery system includes optional delivery/navigation tools such as pre-shaped or steerable catheters. The band materials are described to include PTFE, ePTFE, Dacron, or other inert synthetic or biological materials, and the band can include an optional band and/or stent-like frame structure. Catheters and guidewires are removed after the band is locked in the loop.

Claims Coverage

The document provides two independent method claims that both improve cardiac function by catheter-based delivery of a band or a tube into a ventricle, loop formation, tightening to pull ventricular walls inward, locking the looped configuration, and removing the catheter. Across the dependent claim sets, the inventive features are refined with specific locking and structural or geometric constraints and delivery mechanics.

Catheter-delivered band loop tightening with inwards pulling and locking

Delivering a band to a ventricle of a heart via at least one catheter; guiding the band through the heart to form a loop; pulling walls of the ventricle of the heart inwards by tightening the band following formation of the loop; following tightening, locking the band in the loop; and removing the at least one catheter from the heart.

Catheter-delivered tube loop tightening with inwards pulling and locking

Delivering a tube to a ventricle of a heart via at least one catheter; guiding the tube through the heart to form a loop; pulling walls of the ventricle of the heart inwards by tightening the tube following formation of the loop; following tightening, locking the tube in a looped configuration; and removing the at least one catheter from the heart.

Tightening to a desired loop size

Tightening the band or tube following formation of the loop until the loop reaches a desired size.

Suture lock or self-locking locking of the tightened loop

Locking the band in the loop using a suture lock, or characterizing the band as self-locking.

Loop circumference decreases after tightening

Tightening such that the loop’s circumference after tightening is smaller than the loop’s circumference before tightening.

Overall, the claim coverage centers on catheter delivery of a band or a tube into a ventricular environment, loop formation, tightening to pull ventricular walls inward, and locking the tightened looped configuration, followed by catheter removal. Dependent features specify additional constraints including desired loop size, suture lock or self-locking locking, and a comparative reduction in loop circumference.

Stated Advantages
