Abstract
A bioabsorable stent is disclosed. The stent is made of a polymer and/or non-polymer material and has an elongated body having a proximate end, a distal end, and at least one open channel formed on the exterior surface of the elongated body to provide fluid communication between the proximal end and the distal end. Also disclosed is a bioabsorable stent having an elongated center rod having a proximate end and a distal end and a plurality of leaflets extending outward from the center rod and forming channels between two neighboring leaflets to provide fluid communication between the proximal end and the distal end.
Core Innovation
A method of making a stent forms a polymer tube by extrusion and cutting the polymer tube to form an elongated stent body having a proximate end and a distal end. The elongated body includes a central axis and a center lumen, and at least one open sinusoidally undulating channel is helically and longitudinally wound around the central axis and extends from the proximal end to the distal end.
The undulating channel is formed on the exterior surface of the elongated body to provide fluid communication between the proximal end and the distal end. The undulating channel is not in fluid communication with the center lumen, and the undulating channel does not protrude into the center lumen.
The elongated body comprises a bioabsorbable material. In additional refinements, the sinusoidally undulating channel can be formed with compressible channel walls that reduce the diameter of the stent in a compressed state, and the stent can be expandable in situ upon absorption of body fluid.
The described stent variants can include different diameters at the distal and proximate ends and optional selections of a biological agent, including chemotherapeutic agents, antimicrobial agents, or gene transfer agents, while maintaining the exterior open undulating channel arrangement that provides fluid communication between ends without fluid communication with the center lumen.
Claims Coverage
One independent claim is provided. The claim set includes refinements for channel continuity and multiplicity, dimensional relationships, compressible channel walls with diameter reduction, in-situ expansion behavior upon absorption of body fluid, and an optional biological-agent selection set.
Extruded and cut bioabsorbable stent with open helical sinusoidally undulating exterior channel
A stent formed by forming a polymer tube by extrusion and cutting the polymer tube, wherein the stent comprises an elongated body having a proximate end, a distal end, a central axis, a center lumen, and at least one open sinusoidally undulating channel helically and longitudinally wound around the central axis and extending from the proximal end to the distal end, with the undulating channel formed on the exterior surface to provide fluid communication between the proximal end and the distal end.
Exterior sinusoidally undulating channel not in fluid communication with the center lumen
The stent where the undulating channel is not in fluid communication with the center lumen and does not protrude into the center lumen.
Continuous exterior sinusoidally undulating channel from proximal to distal end
The stent where the at least one open sinusoidally undulating channel is a continuous channel from the proximal end to the distal end of the elongated body.
Compressible channel walls enabling reduced stent diameter in a compressed state
The sinusoidally undulating channel is formed with compressible channel walls that can be compressed against each other in a compressed state to reduce the diameter of the stent.
In-situ expansion upon body fluid absorption with post-implantation diameter greater than pre-implantation diameter
The stent has a pre-implantation diameter Dpre and expands in situ upon absorption of body fluid to a larger post-implantation diameter Dpost, wherein Dpost is greater than Dpre.
Multiple open sinusoidally undulating channels continuous from proximal to distal end
More than one open sinusoidally undulating channel forms a continuous channel from the proximal end to the distal end of the elongated body.
Different diameters at distal and proximate ends
The distal end and the proximate end have different diameters.
Biological agent selected from chemotherapeutic, antimicrobial, or gene transfer agents
The biological agent is selected from chemotherapeutic agents, antimicrobial agents, or gene transfer agents.
The coverage centers on a bioabsorbable stent having an open sinusoidally undulating helical exterior channel that continuously provides fluid communication between proximal and distal ends while not being in fluid communication with the center lumen, with optional refinements for compressible channel walls, in-situ expansion with Dpost greater than Dpre, multiple continuous channels, different end diameters, and an optional biological-agent selection set.
