Abstract

The cutting device for the placement of a knee prosthesis includes a bracket and a cutting guide mounted with the ability to move on the bracket. The bracket includes a first marker for identifying it and a fixing element for fixing it to a bone. The cutting guide includes a second marker for identifying it and a slot defining a cutting plane suited to guiding a cutting tool. The invention also relates to an assistance device and to a system having the cutting device. The invention finally relates to an assistance method and to a computer program product and to a data recording medium for executing the method.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a cutting device for placement of a knee prosthesis. A bracket comprises a first marker having a first rectangular plane surface to form a first pattern corresponding to location of the bracket, and a bracket fixing element configured to attach to a bone. The system also includes a mast with a longitudinally extended portion that receives an articulated assembly.

A cutting guide is movably mounted on the bracket and includes a second marker having a second rectangular plane surface to form a second pattern corresponding to location of the cutting guide. A slot defines a cutting plane so as to guide a cutting tool, and the cutting guide is movable in at least one translational degree of freedom and according to at least two degrees of freedom in rotation. The cutting guide is moved relative to the bracket by an articulated assembly received on the mast and connected to the cutting guide.

The articulated assembly comprises a first control means for rotation along a first axis, a second control means for rotation along a second axis, and a third control means for translation along a third axis. The first control means includes a first screw, a first movable element on the first screw, and a first drive element pivoted in engagement with the first movable element and connected to the cutting guide to rotate the cutting guide. The second control means includes a second screw, a drive wheel on the second screw, and a slope pivot in threaded engagement with the second screw and connected to the cutting guide, while the third control means includes a carriage in sliding engagement with the mast to move the articulated assembly and the cutting guide along the third axis.

The invention further includes an assistance system that uses a single visible-field monocular camera to detect first and second markers, and to generate a reference marker. A reference marker is tied to a mechanical axis of tibia/femur and defines reference axes. The system calculates cutting-plane parameters for the cutting tool and transmits and indicates the cutting plane to an operator using a display and information transmission means, and it further supports point survey tools with a third marker to locate reference points and predetermined points.

Claims Coverage

Five inventive features are identified.

Bracket with rectangular plane marker and bone attachment

A bracket comprised of a first marker having a first rectangular plane surface so as to form a first pattern corresponding to location of the bracket, and a bracket fixing element configured to attach to a bone.

Cutting guide with rectangular plane marker and slot defining cutting plane

A cutting guide movably mounted on the bracket, comprised of a second marker having a second rectangular plane surface to form a second pattern corresponding to location of the cutting guide, and a slot defining a cutting plane so as to guide a cutting tool.

Articulated assembly on mast with three controlled degrees of freedom

An articulated assembly received on the mast and connected to the cutting guide to move the cutting guide relative to the bracket, the articulated assembly comprising a first control means for rotation along a first axis, a second control means for rotation along a second axis, and a third control means for translation along a third axis, with a carriage in sliding engagement with the mast for translation.

Screw-wheel-and-slope-pivot rotation control

The first control means comprises a first screw, a first movable element on the first screw, and a first drive element in pivoted engagement with the first movable element and connected to the cutting guide; the second control means comprises a second screw, a drive wheel on the second screw, and a slope pivot in threaded engagement with the second screw and connected to the cutting guide.

Single monocular camera assistance with marker-based reference marker and cutting-plane parameter determination

An assistance system employing a single visible-field monocular camera to detect first and second markers, generate a reference marker (with reference axes), determine a relative three-dimensional position of the cutting guide relative to the reference mark, and determine cutting-plane parameters for the cutting plane of the slot for the cutting device, with transmission/indication to an operator via a display.

The claims cover a bone-attached bracket and movable cutting guide with marker-based location patterns, an articulated assembly providing rotational and translational adjustment, specific screw-based control means, and a monocular-camera assistance system for marker detection and cutting-plane parameter determination.
