Abstract
An oscillating positive expiratory pressure system including an oscillating positive expiratory pressure device, an adapter coupled to the device, and a control module coupled to the adapter. The control module provides real time information about the use of the device, and provides feedback and storage of the information to improve the use thereof.
Core Innovation
The invention relates to an oscillating positive expiratory pressure system that includes an oscillating positive expiratory pressure device with an inhalation port and a user interface port, together with a mouthpiece. An adapter is coupled to and between the mouthpiece and the user interface port, where the adapter defines a flow channel. A control module is coupled to the adapter and communicates with the flow channel to determine pressure and/or flow and to provide feedback to a user.
The control module includes a housing cantilevered over a top of the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device, where a longitudinal axis extends through the housing and is orthogonal to the flow channel. A pressure and/or flow sensor is disposed in the housing and configured to determine the pressure and/or flow in the flow channel, and a printed circuit board is disposed in the housing and operably connected to the sensor. A battery is also disposed in the housing and operably connected to the printed circuit board, and a visual display coupled to the housing provides feedback to the user.
In a feedback system use case, the adapter is configured to be coupled to and between the mouthpiece and the port of the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device, and the adapter comprises a flow channel. The control module includes a housing spaced above the flow channel and cantilevered rearwardly from the adapter, with the longitudinal axis of the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device extending through the housing during use and remaining orthogonal to the flow channel. The control module again includes a pressure and/or flow sensor, a printed circuit board, a battery, and a visual display configured to provide feedback to a user.
Claims Coverage
The partial content provides two independent claims, each centered on an oscillating positive expiratory pressure feedback arrangement using an adapter-defined flow channel and a control module that senses pressure and/or flow and provides user feedback via a visual display. The inventive features differ mainly in the structural arrangement of the control-module housing relative to the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device and adapter.
Adapter defining a flow channel between mouthpiece and oscillating positive expiratory pressure device ports
An adapter coupled to and between the mouthpiece and the user interface port of the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device, wherein the adapter defines a flow channel.
Cantilevered control module housing with orthogonal longitudinal axis
A control module coupled to the adapter and in communication with the flow channel, the control module comprising a housing cantilevered over a top of the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device, wherein a longitudinal axis of the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device extends through the housing, wherein the longitudinal axis is orthogonal to the flow channel.
In-housing pressure and/or flow sensor, printed circuit board, battery, and visual display for user feedback
A pressure and/or flow sensor disposed in the housing and configured to determine the pressure and/or flow in the flow channel, a printed circuit board disposed in the housing and operably connected to the pressure and/or flow sensor, a battery disposed in the housing and operably connected to the printed circuit board, and a visual display coupled to the housing and operably connected to the printed circuit board, wherein the visual display is configured to provide feedback to a user.
Cantilevered rearwardly spaced control-module housing over the adapter flow channel in a feedback system
A control module coupled to the adapter and in communication with the flow channel, the control module comprising a housing spaced above the flow channel and cantilevered rearwardly from the adapter, wherein a longitudinal axis of the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device is configured to extend through the housing during use, wherein the longitudinal axis is orthogonal to the flow channel.
Both independent claims cover a control-module arrangement that senses pressure and/or flow in a flow channel defined by an adapter between the mouthpiece and the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device port, and uses a visual display to provide user feedback. Claim 1 specifies a housing cantilevered over a top of the oscillating positive expiratory pressure device with the longitudinal axis orthogonal to the flow channel, while claim 12 specifies a housing spaced above the flow channel and cantilevered rearwardly from the adapter with the longitudinal axis extending through the housing during use and remaining orthogonal to the flow channel.
Stated Advantages
Provides feedback to a user via a visual display.
Documented Applications
A feedback system configured for use with an oscillating positive expiratory pressure device.
