Abstract
A dermal patch system for administering a pharmaceutical includes a vial that stores a pharmaceutical and a cartridge coupled to the vial. The cartridge includes a pull mechanism, a pump, a plurality of microneedles in communication with the vial. The microneedles are configured to move between an undeployed position to a deployed position. When pulled, the pull mechanism is configured to cause the microneedles to move from the undeployed position to the deployed position and cause the pump to pump the pharmaceutical from the vial and to the microneedles.
Core Innovation
The dermal patch system administers a pharmaceutical by using a vial that stores a pharmaceutical and a cartridge coupled to the vial, where the dermal patch includes a pull mechanism, a pump, and a plurality of microneedles. The microneedles are configured to move between an undeployed position and a deployed position. When pulled, the pull mechanism is configured to cause the pump to pump the pharmaceutical from the vial and to the microneedles while moving the microneedles to the deployed position.
The pump comprises a pump portion having a cog, and the cog includes a plurality of protrusions configured to compress a tube as the cog rotates, thereby causing the pharmaceutical to be expelled from the vial. Further described embodiments include mechanics for priming the microneedles with an amount of pharmaceutical before microneedle deployment, and for coordinating microneedle movement with a trigger that moves between a first position and a second position when the pull mechanism is pulled.
Additional described features include trigger-driven release tied to undeployed and deployed states, and a retraction button that moves the microneedles from a deployed position back to an undeployed position. Latches prevent vial removal and ensure microneedle retention pre/post use, and optional microneedle deployment mechanics depend on orientation-dependent operation. A cartridge quick response code is associated with an electronic medical record database for administration tracking.
Claims Coverage
The independent claim explicitly covers a dermal patch system with a vial-cartridge architecture, a pull-actuated pump that moves pharmaceutical to microneedles, and a microneedle array transitioning between undeployed and deployed positions. It also specifies a pump structure using a cog with protrusions compressing a tube to expel pharmaceutical, yielding two core inventive feature areas.
Pull mechanism causing pump and microneedle deployment
A pull mechanism configured so that, when pulled, the pull mechanism causes the pump to pump the pharmaceutical from the vial and to the microneedles and causes the microneedles to move to the deployed position from an undeployed position.
Cog with protrusions compressing tube to expel pharmaceutical
A pump comprising a pump portion having a cog, where the cog includes a plurality of protrusions configured to compress a tube as the cog rotates thereby causing the pharmaceutical to be expelled from the vial.
The independent claim coverage centers on coordinating pull actuation with pumping of pharmaceutical from the vial to microneedles while transitioning microneedles from an undeployed position to a deployed position, and on a rotating cog with protrusions that compresses a tube to expel pharmaceutical.
