Abstract

Implants for the fusion or fixation of two bone segments are described. For example, the implants can be used for the fusion or fixation of the sacroiliac joint. The implants can have a matrix structure, have a rectilinear cross-sectional area, and have a curvature.

Core Innovation

The implant comprises an elongate body having a fixed length, a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis, and a rectilinear outer profile in a cross-section transverse to the longitudinal axis. The elongate body includes a plurality of linear apex struts disposed between the proximal end and the distal end, where each apex strut is part of a first pair with a first circumferentially adjacent apex strut and is part of a second pair with a second circumferentially adjacent apex strut. A plurality of faces is provided such that every pair of circumferentially adjacent linear apex struts has one of the plurality of faces therebetween.

Each face includes a plurality of fenestrations, and the faces include a matrix structure comprising support struts. The support struts define the fenestrations and extend between the respective pair of adjacent linear apex struts. The support struts can be characterized as including transverse support struts and/or oblique support struts, and the fenestrations may include a first set of fenestrations and a second set of fenestrations with different sizes on each face. In certain embodiments, the first set of fenestrations is triangular.

The apex struts are preferentially porous, with radially outer portions being porous and radially inner portions being not porous. In embodiments where the faces are defined by support struts forming fenestrations, the support struts are also preferentially porous, with radially outer portions being porous and radially inner portions being not porous. In related embodiments, the outer profile is triangular in cross-section transverse to the longitudinal axis.

Claims Coverage

The document provides three independent claims directed to sacroiliac joint fixation or fusion implants, centered on an elongate fixed-length body with rectilinear or triangular cross-sectional outer profiles, circumferentially paired linear apex struts, faces with fenestrations defined by support struts, and preferential porosity limited to radially outer portions.

Fixed-length sacroiliac joint implant with rectilinear outer profile and circumferential apex strut pairing

An implant for the fixation or fusion of a sacroiliac joint, comprising an elongate body having a fixed length, a proximal end, a distal end, a longitudinal axis, and a rectilinear outer profile in a cross-section transverse to the longitudinal axis, the elongate body further comprising a plurality of linear apex struts disposed between the proximal end and the distal end, wherein each apex strut is part of a first pair of apex struts with a first circumferentially adjacent apex strut and part of a second pair of apex struts with a second circumferentially adjacent apex strut, and wherein a plurality of faces is arranged so every pair of circumferentially adjacent linear apex struts has one of the plurality of faces therebetween.

Faces with fenestrations defined by matrix structure between circumferentially adjacent apex struts

The implant wherein each of the plurality of faces includes a plurality of fenestrations, and each face includes a matrix structure with support struts disposed between the respective pair of adjacent linear apex struts, with the fenestrations having a first set and a second set with different sizes and, in certain embodiments, the first set of fenestrations being triangular.

Preferential porosity in radially outer portions of apex struts and optionally support struts

The implant wherein the plurality of linear apex struts are preferentially porous with radially outer portions being porous and radially inner portions being not porous, and wherein, for embodiments where the faces include support struts, the plurality of support struts in each face are preferentially porous with radially outer portions being porous and radially inner portions not porous.

Across the independent claims, the inventive concept is anchored by circumferentially paired linear apex struts in an elongate fixed-length sacroiliac joint implant having a rectilinear or triangular cross-sectional outer profile. Faces between circumferentially adjacent apex struts include fenestrations defined by support struts forming a matrix structure, and the porosity is preferentially configured such that porous regions are limited to radially outer portions of the apex struts and, where present, the support struts.
