Abstract

A syringe assembly, comprising a syringe barrel having a forward end and a rearward end and being arranged along a longitudinal axis; a restricting element, moveably supported onto a portion of the syringe assembly and positionable in one of an injection disabling position and an injection enabling position in different operative orientations of the syringe assembly; a plunger rod assembly displaceable within the syringe barrel and operatively coupled with the restricting element; the plunger rod assembly having a restricting feature adapted to cooperate with the restricting element, such that when the restricting element in the injection disabling position, the plunger rod assembly is permitted to be displaced axially forwardly only up to a certain longitudinal extent relative to the syringe barrel and when the restricting element is in the injection enabling position, the plunger rod assembly is permitted to be further displaced axially forwardly relative to the syringe barrel.

Core Innovation

The invention provides an improved syringe assembly with a syringe barrel arranged along a longitudinal axis and a moveably supported restricting element positionable in an injection disabling position and an injection enabling position. The restricting element has a flat portion extending transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis, and a plunger rod assembly is displaceable within the syringe barrel and is operatively coupled with the restricting element.

In the injection disabling position, the plunger rod assembly is displaceable axially forwardly only up to a certain longitudinal extent relative to the syringe barrel, and further axial displacement is prevented by cooperation between at least one restricting feature on the plunger rod assembly and the restricting element. The prevention by the cooperating restricting feature and restricting element limits forward axial travel to prevent injection after mixing is complete, thereby performing medicament mixing under an injection disabling operative orientation.

In the injection enabling position, the plunger rod assembly is permitted to be further displaced axially forwardly relative to the syringe barrel and relative to the restricting element, thereby enabling medicament ejection through injection. The restricting element is displaced rotatably about the longitudinal axis to position it in the injection enabling position, and upon engagement of a forwardly facing shoulder with the flat portion, rotation about the longitudinal axis positions the restricting element in the injection enabling position so further axial forward displacement delivers at least one medicament.

The described cooperation uses structural geometry including a restricting feature formed along a portion of the length of the plunger rod assembly defining a flat wall, and a restricting element having a slot with a flat edge that is guided along the flat wall when positioned in the injection disabling position. Multiple embodiments are described to realize restricting-feature structures and transitions between operative orientations, including guided flat-edge/flat-wall engagement followed by engagement with a forwardly facing shoulder.

Claims Coverage

The document includes two independent claims: a syringe assembly independent claim and a method for delivering medicament independent claim. Together, they define a restricting element that is positionable in injection disabling and injection enabling operative orientations, with coordinated limiting and release of forward axial displacement of a plunger rod assembly.

Moveable restricting element between injection disabling and injection enabling positions

A restricting element moveably supported on a portion of the syringe assembly is positionable in an injection disabling position and an injection enabling position, and the restricting element has a flat portion extending transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis.

Plunger rod assembly with cooperating restricting feature to limit axial forward travel

A plunger rod assembly displaceable within the syringe barrel and operatively coupled with the restricting element has at least one restricting feature adapted to cooperate with the restricting element, wherein in the injection disabling position the plunger rod assembly is displaceable axially forwardly only up to a certain longitudinal extent and is prevented from further axial displacement by said cooperation.

Rotatable positioning of the restricting element to permit further axial displacement

To position the restricting element in the injection enabling position, the restricting element is displaced rotatably about the longitudinal axis, and upon engagement of a forwardly facing shoulder with the flat portion the restricting element is rotatable about the longitudinal axis to thereby position the restricting element in the injection enabling position and permit further axial forward displacement.

Flat wall and slot flat-edge guided engagement sequencing

The at least one restricting feature comprises a first restricting feature formed along a portion of the length of the plunger rod assembly and defining a flat wall, and the restricting element has a slot with a flat edge, whereas when the restricting element is positioned in the injection disabling position the flat edge is guided along the flat wall of said first restricting feature.

Delivery method using injection disabling for mixing and injection enabling for delivery

A method for delivering at least one medicament to a subject by providing a syringe assembly, movably coupling a restricting element having a flat portion, providing a plunger rod assembly coupled to the restricting element with a forwardly facing shoulder, performing medicament mixing by limiting axial forward displacement in an injection disabling position, then displacing the restricting element rotatably to the injection enabling position and thereafter permitting further axial forward displacement to deliver the at least one medicament.

The claims focus on a moveable, rotatable restricting element with a flat portion, a plunger rod assembly carrying cooperating restricting features that limit axial forward displacement in an injection disabling orientation for medicament mixing, and a transition via engagement with a forwardly facing shoulder that positions the restricting element in an injection enabling orientation to permit further axial displacement and medicament delivery.

Stated Advantages

Prevents further axial displacement after medicament mixing is complete when the restricting element is in the injection disabling position, thereby preventing injection.

Permits further axial displacement when the restricting element is in the injection enabling position, thereby enabling delivery of at least one medicament to a subject.

Allows positioning of the restricting element between injection disabling and injection enabling operative orientations by displacement rotatably about the longitudinal axis with engagement of a forwardly facing shoulder.

Uses guided flat edge along a flat wall and shoulder engagement to transition between operative orientations.
