Abstract

The present invention provides a wearable device for monitoring blood-pressure.

Core Innovation

The invention relates to a wearable, non-invasive device for monitoring blood pressure in a blood vessel in a body member using tissue adjacent to the blood vessel. The device positions a digit-adjacent contact member to compress tissue to receive pulsatile blood flow, with radial tissue displacement and radial force created in the tissue engaging surface when pressure in the blood vessel changes. The radial force is concentrated in a central region of the contact member relative to a perimeter region to increase central-region displacement in a radial direction.

A strain device is located in a device body having an interior surface and a cavity, and a contact member formed as a single piece has a central region and a perimeter region with an undeflected state and a deflected state. When the contact member is in the undeflected state, the central region protrudes beyond the interior surface; when deflected, more of the central region is in the cavity than in the undeflected state. The contact member includes a strain inducing surface adjacent to the strain device, such that the increased displacement of the central region causes a change in a strain in the strain device.

The change in strain produces a change in an electrical property of the strain device to enable blood-pressure calculation. The contact member uses differing first and second compliance for the perimeter region and the central region to concentrate radial force in the central region, and the device body and contact member include structural features to control deflection and tissue compression. Variations described include cavities and soft elastomer contact members to suppress non-radial motion and protect the strain sensor, optional primary and secondary sensors, wireless signal transmission, and optional calibration using an oscillometric blood pressure cuff.

Claims Coverage

Independent claim clm-00001 includes the core inventive concept and describes the device body, cavity, single-piece contact member with central and perimeter regions (undeflected/deflected states), tissue compression producing radial force, compliance-based force concentration, and a strain device that produces a change in electrical property for blood-pressure monitoring. No additional independent claims are provided in the provided claim list.

Central-perimeter single-piece contact member with undeflected and deflected states

A contact member formed as a single piece and comprising a central region and a perimeter region, wherein the central region is surrounded by and protrudes from the perimeter region, wherein the contact member has an undeflected state and a deflected state, wherein when the contact member is in the undeflected state, the central region protrudes beyond the interior surface of the device body, wherein more of the central region is in the cavity when the contact member is in the deflected state than when the contact member is in the undeflected state.

Tissue compression and radial force concentration to central region via differing compliance

When the device body is positioned adjacent to the tissue, the central region and the perimeter region contact the tissue to compress the tissue, wherein the perimeter region has a first compliance and the central region has a second compliance, wherein when a tissue engaging surface engages the tissue, displacement of the tissue in a radial direction caused by a change in a pressure in the blood vessel displaces the tissue engaging surface creating a radial force in the tissue engaging surface, wherein the first compliance differs from the second compliance to concentrate the radial force in the central region of the contact member causing increased displacement of the central region in the radial direction relative to the perimeter region.

Strain device adjacent strain inducing surface producing change in electrical property

A strain device located in the device body, wherein the contact member comprises a strain inducing surface extended from a surface opposite to the central region, and wherein the strain inducing surface is adjacent to the strain device, wherein the increased displacement of the central region in the radial direction relative to the perimeter region causes a change in a strain in the strain device to produce a change in an electrical property of the strain device.

Across the provided independent claim clm-00001, the coverage centers on a single-piece central/perimeter contact member with undeflected and deflected states relative to a cavity, tissue compression producing radial force, compliance-based concentration of radial force and displacement into the central region, and a strain device adjacent to a strain inducing surface that produces a change in an electrical property for blood-pressure monitoring.
